After meeting Franco Ziviani earlier this year in Munich, the current owner of the GERALD CHARLES brand, a close friend of Gérald Genta and former CEO of Audemars Piguet Italy, and listening to his stories about the brand, his connection with Genta and the watch industry in general, I was keen to learn more about the brand. So I flew to Geneva for it.

Gerald Charles was founded in 2000 by Gérald Charles Genta. Besides designing some of the most important sports watches in the world, he also had his own brands, where he could be more creative and experiment with different designs. Gerald Charles, named after Genta’s first two names, was the last brand he founded. Being a creative mind, running the business was not always easy for him. So, in 2003, he asked his friend Franco Ziviani to buy the brand. Genta continued working as its chief designer until 2011.

In the heart of Geneva, I visited the Gerald Charles Atelier, where you can learn more about the brand and its watches. Some of the watches are assembled here by watchmakers, and there’s also a museum dedicated to the brand. I’ll come back to that in a separate post. And, of course, you can try on some watches.

The Maestro case is the brand’s signature design, used across its collections. It’s interesting to see how many different variations and moods the brand can create around a single case shape, keeping it relevant for so many years.

I like the concept of the GERALD CHARLES Maestro GC Sport. A light, thin and durable sports watch that actually doesn’t look like a sports watch in the traditional sense.
Here is the latest addition to the collection: the Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise, with a vibrant and bold gradient turquoise dial.
The watch features an ultra-light Grade 5 titanium case weighing just 64 grams, a left-hand screw-down crown designed for maximum comfort during physical activity, and an ultra-thin automatic movement, offering 50 hours of power reserve, 5G shock resistance and 100 metres of water resistance.
Limited to 100 pieces.

Some watches are more fun to shoot than others. The Neo Constant Escapement from Girard-Perregaux is definitely one of them.

This watch is as impressive technically, offering superior chronometric performance, as it is in front of the camera, showing the beauty of its constant-force mechanism.

It’s not small at 45 mm in diameter, but the space is needed to admire all the components. And despite its size, it feels light on the wrist, thanks to the titanium case.

Since 2019, the watch world has been waiting for this watch. Ever since we saw photos of the Overseas Dual Time prototype in titanium and tantalum on the wrist of photographer and alpinist Cory Richards.

Only this year did Vacheron Constantin add the Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points to the permanent collection. And not just one, but four models.

But what makes this watch so appealing?

Is it the departure from classical materials, the punchy details, and the way it makes the appearance feel less like traditional luxury and more sporty, adventurous and extreme? And then connecting this modern look with more traditional watchmaking techniques underneath. Is it a secret sauce?
