A pendant from the 1920s, a gift from Queen Sophie of Greece. An unheated sapphire, most likely from Sri Lanka. And inside its negative crystals filled with liquid CO₂, a mineral that, to our knowledge, had never been described in sapphire fluid inclusions.

A study by Féodor Blumentritt, Candice Caplan and Franck Notari, published in Revue de l'AFG No. 218 (2022).

Autumn 2026 brings good news: issue 8 of GEMMES, the French-language journal published by Gemmologie & Francophonie, is now online. At GGTL Laboratories, we are proud to support the journal again as a sponsor, and pleased that several members of our team are among its authors.

The issue runs to 160 pages and looks at gemstones from many angles: jewellery, history, a legendary collector, a new tourmaline deposit in Ethiopia, a colourful cocktail, the analysis of a historical figure's ring, and even a metal rarely seen in jewellery, aluminium.

We congratulate our colleagues Féodor Blumentritt, Candice Caplan and Franck Notari on their contributions, along with all the authors of this issue: Haimanot Sisay, Vincent Pardieu, Léonard Cornuz, Victoria Jégou, Léa Rémy, Marie Chabrol & Charline Coupeau, Céline Gaslain-Leduc, Boris Chauviré, Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Ruben Vera, Lauriane Brémond, Aurélien Delaunay, Guillaume Soubiraa, Marine Bouvier, Lauriane Pinsault, Mathieu Dekeukelaire, Madeleine Delacroix, Fanta Sylla, Élisabeth Nève, Amélie Snyers, Moïse Monticol and Chloé Picard. We also thank the peer-review committee, whose high standards make the journal what it is.

We are glad to support this project alongside GemGenève, the Laboratoire Français de Gemmologie, the FEEG, the Société Royale Belge de Gemmologie and Thibault Leclerc (Société Platin'Or Genève).

Congratulations to the whole Gemmologie & Francophonie team. We are already looking forward to issue 9, due in March 2027.

Natural or synthetic?

Spotted while screening a 0.80 mm melee diamond parcel: this beautifully luminescent octahedral structure!
A clear indication of this diamond's natural origin.

Seen through the lens of our DFI, which gives only two answers for colourless diamonds: natural or synthetic. HPHT, CVD, even HPHT-treated CVD, nothing gets past it, from 0.4 mm melee to stones over 100 carats. No referrals to send to a lab: you are the lab!

A gold and quartz pendant, set with one cabochon, four beads and three sapphire pendeloques. Made around 1920, attributed to the house of Koch.

A jewel that did more than survive a century: it was given by a queen to a baroness, in recognition of her work in Red Cross hospitals during the First World War.

It was entrusted to us for analysis. And under the microscope, one of these sapphires... just one... took us somewhere we did not expect. Far enough that what we found in it has, to our knowledge, never been described before in a sapphire.

Over the coming week, we are opening the file for you. Together we will examine this gem and its inclusions.

We will take you inside this jewel. Stay with us!

Some inclusions just sit there. Others tell stories.

Deep inside certain sapphires from Kashmir hides a tiny crystal of uranothorianite — a naturally radioactive mineral, trapped since the corundum itself was forming.

The result: a radio-induced photoluminescence halo. Invisible under ordinary light, it reveals its green glow only under UV.

💎 Micrograph of the week 💎

Octahedral luminescent structures in a melee-size (8/8) diamond, captured with our DFI©, part of our ongoing hunt for synthetics in a parcel. These clean, regular geometries tell the story of crystal growth at a microscopic scale — and that's exactly the kind of detail our instruments are built to reveal.

Since this image was taken, the DFI has evolved considerably. Today in Geneva, we work with the DFI© V3R, the latest generation of our system — faster, more powerful and precise, and developed to meet the ever-rising demands of sorting synthetic diamonds, regardless of size.
