An outstanding work in the painter’s oeuvre.

Compton lived in Munich from 1869 onwards and was an accomplished mountaineer who knew and studied the mountains and was a member of various alpine clubs. His mountain motifs are characterized by great realism, yet are also of the utmost painterly delicacy and power.
In the immediate vicinity of these peaks, this year’s Winter Olympics for Sky will begin on February 6, 2026, in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

We have no information about this remarkable artist, nor can we determine the location with certainty. The painting probably depicts a village near the Páris Gorge in northeastern Hungary that no longer exists.

„Evening Clouds“ titled in graphite on the reverse
The painting depicts what is presumably a Saxon winter landscape. A dog and its companion are the only animated and moving motifs in the bleak, cold environment.
Oil on canvas mounted on wooden panel, 450 x 350 mm
Teuscher was self-taught, learning by copying the Old Masters. However, this winter landscape is clearly in the style of New Objectivity, which is why it can be dated to around 1930.

Lettered extensively around image with excerpts of Dante’s Divina Comedia. Lettered with publication line below image: „B. Caimax excudit“.

The Devil at centre, with three faces and three pairs of wings, standing in a pool and devouring a damned soul, against dark background; after Lodovico Cigoli.

Acquisition date: November 5, 2024

Ludovico Cigoli (1559-1613) made drawings for the engraving in Florence around 1595. A sketchy sheet without writing can be found in the Uffizi. (Red chalk, pen and brown ink, blue wash, 26 × 20 cm, Florence, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi (GDSU 8951 F)
A more elaborate preparatory drawing was offered on the American art market in 2007. (Pen and brown ink, 268 x 213 mm). The inscription “LUCIFER” is already at the top in capital letters. The outlines of the cartouches can be seen on the sides, the writing is missing. See the illustrations.
Cigolis devil figure is based on Giovanni Stradano’s depiction of 1588 (Florence, GDSU 2739F.). This in turn is based on a drawing by Botticelli.

A relief mask by Michelangelo Februcci (1559 Fisole - 1626 Florence) was probably created around the same time. See the last photo.

Winter Night

Possibly identical to the “Winternacht”, which was exhibited at the German Art Exhibition in Dresden in 1899 under the catalog number 453 on page 36.

The path leading from the foreground into the depths is covered with heavy snow and therefore almost inaccessible. The cold moonlight of a clear winter night determines the color scheme.
Bluish-white snow dominates the foreground, forming an idiosyncratic, cool color harmony with the flowing, vegetal forms of bare, brownish trees with withered leaves.
The stillness and solitude of the winter forest at night and the metamorphosis of a landscape in the cold season are the subject of this pastel.
