The State of Fashion 2025 report by and reveals a tough year ahead for the fashion industry, with only 20% of executives expecting consumer sentiment to improve. 😬 Sustainability, once a central focus, now seems to be a lower priority, with just 18% of fashion executives citing it as a top-three risk for growth. But it’s not all doom and gloom — brands that adapt quickly will find opportunities! 🌱

We’re seeing regional growth in Asia, especially in India 🇮🇳 and Japan 🇯🇵, while brands balance affordability with quality in a climate of economic uncertainty. 💸 Shoppers are more value-conscious, and AI-driven shopping experiences are on the rise. Plus, the Silver Generation (50+) is becoming an important consumer segment. 👵👴

Sustainability still matters, but it’s now about long-term strategies that align with market shifts. 🌍

Last month, the EU set sweeping new regulations that will fundamentally change the fashion industry. These changes ensure that big businesses eliminate labour abuses and environmental harm within their supply chains. By 2029, companies with over 1,000 employees are required to audit suppliers and actively prevent malpractice, facing penalties up to 5% of net worldwide turnover for non-compliance.

Additionally, the EU is adopting strict measures against goods made with forced labour, mirroring initiatives like those targeting human rights abuses in Xinjiang. This ban will take effect three years after approval from member states.

In a push for sustainability, new standards mandate that clothes and footwear be more reusable, repairable, and recyclable. Companies must now include environmental information through digital product passports, and unsold products cannot be destroyed within two years of the rules’ enactment.

Building on existing legislation, these regulations also require that supply chains are free from deforestation, emphasising the need for strategic investments in supply chain traceability and monitoring.

As similar regulations are being considered in the US, the EU’s bold moves could set a global precedent, reshaping how fashion is produced and consumed worldwide.
