40 Jahre Bear Family Records

“Eine märchenhafte deutsche Erfolgsgeschichte”
(Kultur-Spiegel, 2008)

TREASURES from the BEAR FAMILY WAREHOUSE, Part 11

Hundres of live-stage radio barn dances were beamed out across the United States during the golden age of radio. One of the best-known shows was the Big D Jamboree from Dallas, Texas. Like its counterpart from Shreveport, the Louisiana Hayride, but unlike the Grand Ole Opry from Nashville, the Big D Jamboree was tolerant enough in the 1950s to open its gates to the emerging rockabilly sounds. That’s why the show offered not only country music to its listeners but also hip-shakin’ sounds by the likes of Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Johnny Cash, Eddie Bond, Sid King, and many others. This 8CD box set focuses on live recordings of the Big D Jamboree featuring nearly 300 historic tracks with an incredible atmosphere! It also includes a detailed book with rare photos and the in-depth story of the Big D Jamboree from Dallas!

Well, this 10-inch has been on the market for a few months now, but we just have to praise it again because it’s simply top-notch.

These guys from Berlin are definitely one of the leading acts when it comes to authentic Rock’n’Roll made in Germany. Admittedly, that makes me a bit proud of them.

For more than 30 years now, the boys have been touring tirelessly and with enviable energy throughout Europe and the U.S. plus probably everywhere else in the world with their bands. Let’s say The Round Up Boys and Ike and the Capers to name just two of them all. In addition, they’ve also contributed as musicians to many other recordings.

With exemplary dedication and meticulous attention to detail, they’ve created a recording environment in their studio that’s second to none and can hold its own against the best. Using original vintage equipment and owning an incredible understanding of the conditions of the ’50s, they produce a sound that is usually almost indistinguishable from original recordings.

Now - especially since the ’90s - there are surely quite a few brilliant bands around the world that deliver Rockabilly tracks that sound pretty authentic. They sound for instance, like they were recorded under modest conditions at a small or unknown label, maybe even in a garage or living room. And the Berlin guys have already proven that they can deliver this sound perfectly as well.

But what makes Cherry Casino and the Gamblers so special is that they make it sound as if it were recorded in a studio owned by one of the 50s major labels. And that’s something not everyone can pull off. Here we have 11 wonderful, danceable self-penned compositions (!) on this 10-inch album, and we love every one of them. It’s just that the quality remains consistent, while the song selection is very varied and keeps boredom at bay. That’s why we won’t bore you now with individual descriptions of the songs. I’d call it Rock ’n’ roll with a shot of rhythm and blues and a blue note here and there. Wonderful artwork rounds out the visual experience.

Just give it a listen on the Bear Family website.

That said, it sounds even better on your own record player than on your phone or computer. Play it Loud!

What more could you want? It’s great that these great musicians are on such a great label finally.

TREASURES from the BEAR FAMILY WAREHOUSE, Part 10

One half of the entertainment scene knows Ed Bruce as the country music singing western actor of the 70s and 80s. The other half still knows him as a young rockabilly artist on Sun Records in the 1950s. Few people know what Ed Bruce did in between! Bear Family’s “See the Big Man Cry” covers this period – from his early Sun recordings to tracks he cut for Wand, RCA-Victor, and others. This CD is the perfect overview of Bruce’s early career!

TREASURES from the BEAR FAMILY WAREHOUSE, Part 9

Joe Leonard’s Lin & Kliff labels released some of rockabilly music’s most enduring sides, including tracks by Buck Griffin, Andy Starr, the Strikes, David Ray (Smith), and others. However, there’s much more to know and hear about those labels, as Leonard recorded a variety of music genres, including country, pop, doo-wop, and rock’n’roll. Our 4CD box set spotlights this forgotten chapter of American music with extensive liner notes by Kevin Coffey.
