PART 2 - RESERVING ART. PROTECTING HISTORY.

The conservation and restoration of a work of art require far more than technical skill. They demand experience, precision and a deep understanding of the artwork itself.
In this Reel, art expert Mr. Kerle explains why professional conservation can play such an important role in preserving an artwork’s condition and where appropriate, safeguarding its long-term value.
A carefully executed restoration is not about changing a work of art: it is about protecting what is already there. Every decision, from the choice of materials to the extent of an intervention, must be carefully considered and professionally documented.
For collectors and the art market alike, responsible conservation means respecting the original work while ensuring that it can be preserved for future generations.
Because when it comes to fine art, preservation is part of its legacy.

SOME ICONS ARE SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN

Join our handbag expert Marie Friedrich as she explores a selection of exceptional Hermès bags in this special edition of “This or That”.
And just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s one final reveal: the rare Hermès bag “Le Sac Initiale”, soon to be offered in our upcoming November auction.

Designed under Martin Margiela, who served as creative director at Hermès from 1997 to 2003, the bag was introduced in the Autumn/Winter 2002 collection. At 32 x 23 x 17 cm, it takes its proportions from the classic Kelly 32, yet translates the house’s most famous silhouette into Margiela’s own language.

With an exterior entirely free of hardware and logos, it embodies the quiet, discreet luxury that defined his vision for the house. Its asymmetric shoulder straps interlace to form an “H”, the only signature it needs – and this could be one reason why the bag got its name. “Le Sac Initiale” was reportedly produced for only a short time, until around 2004, which makes it a rarity today.

Take your opportunity to own a rare piece of fashion history on November 27!

MADE BY HUMANS IS THE NEW LUXURY
On the occasion of Otto Mueller’s birthday, we celebrate the distinctive artistic vision of one of the leading figures of German Expressionism.
Known for his distinctive use of colour, simplified forms and expressive compositions, Mueller developed a highly individual visual language that continues to captivate to this day.
This work, a colour lithograph dating to 1926/27, exemplifies his unmistakable approach to figure and form.
Discover this work in our upcoming November auction.

PART 1 - WHEN RESTORATION BECOMES A PART OF AN ARTWORKS JOURNEY

Before a work of art can enter the auction market, it may sometimes require careful conservation or restoration. But when it comes to valuable works, every intervention matters.
In this Reel, art expert Mr. Kerle explains how restoration can be approached professionally: from assessing the artwork’s condition to determining whether an intervention is necessary, appropriate and carried out to the highest professional standards.
The goal is not to make a work of art “new again.” It is about preserving its integrity, respecting its history, and ensuring that any necessary intervention is carried out with the utmost care and expertise.
Because in the world of fine art, restoration is not simply a technical process. It is a responsibility.

AUTUMN VIBES

As autumn settles in, we turn to a work by Thomas Herbst, one of the significant German Impressionists and a key figure of the Hamburg art scene.
In Cows, Herbst captures rural life with a fresh, atmospheric sensitivity characteristic of his work. A student of Karl Steffeck and Christian Rohlfs’ teacher Carl Verlat, Herbst also shared an atelier in Paris with his close friend Max Liebermann in 1876/77. He later settled permanently in Hamburg and, in 1897, became one of the co-founders of the Hamburg Artists’ Club.
With the season changing, we are looking ahead to the final auction of the year this November and to another exceptional selection of works from art history.

More to come.
