The asking prices for Ethiopian Paraiba at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Show genuinely surprised me.

Some dealers were asking more for small, heavily included Ethiopian stones than for Paraibas from Brazil or Mozambique.

Based on the material I saw, I find that difficult to justify. My impression is that some traders may have paid too much for the rough and are now trying to recover their costs. But asking prices are not necessarily selling prices.

Ultimately, the market will decide what these gems are worth. Would you pay a premium for Ethiopian origin?

Ethiopian Paraiba sounded like one of the most exciting new discoveries in coloured gemstones. But after seeing the material in Hong Kong, my impression was more mixed.

The smaller stones had decent colour, but were often heavily included. In the larger stones, I was missing that electric swimming-pool blue that makes the finest Paraibas so special.

The chemistry may help explain why. Ethiopian material can contain substantially more iron than Paraibas from Brazil and Mozambique, which affects the colour.

5 steps to become a gem dealer. The last one matters most.

Education. Learn gemmology and understand the fundamentals.

Equipment. Loupe, tweezers, refractometer, microscope.

Experience. Examine as many stones as possible. This is how you learn what makes one gem ordinary and another exceptional.

Network. Build relationships with dealers, miners, cutters, labs and clients.

Obsession. Love the stones and forget about making quick money. Gems are not just a commodity. Once you really get into them, they become an addiction.

It was 1986, and I was on my first business trip to Brazil, alone in Belo Horizonte.

I had already spent almost all my money on Aquamarines and Tourmalines when a gem dealer named Pingo approached me on the street. Normally, I would never buy from a stranger. But Pingo was quite a character, and he had an extraordinary stone with him: a cushion-cut orangey-pink Imperial Topaz.

The colour immediately caught me. The only problem: I had no money left.

I barely slept that night. The next morning, I called my family and tried to explain just how special I thought this stone was. Eventually, my mother agreed to lend me the $30,000 I needed to buy it.

It became my first major gemstone purchase, and, as it turned out, an excellent investment.
