On December 10, 1898, a treaty signed in Paris ended the Spanish-American war and the United States gained control over the Philippines. The United States began minting coins for the Philippines after this, including the Philippine peso. This is a beautifully toned PCGS MS66 1904 Philippines Peso that was struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

In 1713, during the War of Spanish Secession, French noble and military commander Claude de Villars led the Rhine Campaign against the Holy Roman Empire. During the siege of Landau, the German city produced “emergency,” money to encourage commerce as citizens sheltered from the enemy outside the walls. This PCGS MS63 1713 One Florin 4 Kreuzer Klippe is a fine example of emergency money and is Top Pop.

Here is a PCGS MS65 1774-PTS JR 8 Reales from the Millennia Collection, which was struck at the Potosí Mint in Bolivia. The mines in this city produced over 60,000 tons of silver. The coin exhibits a sharp strike and beautiful surfaces and only one example is graded higher.

As the Age of Pirates faded in the Caribbean, European powers engaged in a struggle for New World trade dominance. France trumpeted its economic authority in the Windward Islands with coinage created specifically for the region, including this PCGS MS64 1731-H 12 Sols. Only two examples grade better than this one, which exhibits gorgeous tones.
