Made using Scottish Oak felled in Fife, which is firstly sliced into workable 3 to 5mm thick sections and pain takingly hand cut, pierced, veneered, sanded, oiled into lots of geometric components and assembled to make this asymmetric design.

It's a long journey from seed to tree to timber then jewellery! My small part can be an arduous, physical process at times, making even simple-seeming outcomes like this necklace. Time spent finishing work is a skill practiced over and over.

The value of these skills in making, not just in jewellery, but all craft disciplines feels so very vulnerable right now, due cuts happening to creative funding and organisations local to me and of course the latest shocking course closures at ECA.

Cuts which affect roles, places and opportunities where women and women's voices are the majority, anyone else thinking this?

This is my jewellery design for 'Suffragette City' an exhibition of contemporary jewellery that responds to themes connected to the Suffragette movement for which kicked off this week.

My design explores ideas of femininity, domestic labour and repair through the choice of colour, materials and processes used. Repurposed laundry detergent plastics are stitched together with pearls, materials that carry their own associations with the domestic sphere and femininity. Historically, pearls have symbolised femininity, fertility, and at times tears or sadness.

By transforming materials and processes traditionally associated with domestic labour into jewellery, I hope the piece can be viewed as a symbol of expression rather than oppression.

Something rather exciting coming up! I'm super delighted to have been selected to show my work in the
'City of Suffragettes' exhibition with a cohort of 30 + ACJ makers in September.

If you are in Grantown On Spey in August.....

Bord Necklace: Signals Edition is being displayed in OPENSPACE • THE VAULT •right now alongside 15 other artist/makers work in response to the colours RED + BLACK and themes connected to the Cairngorms.

The Signals Edition of the Bord Necklace explores movement, communication and caution through bold geometric forms and a vivid red colour palette. Hand-cut from Scottish oak veneered with Formica, the necklace draws inspiration from the graphic language of warning signs, trail markers and symbolic wayfinding.

Its repeated geometric shapes suggest a coded message, that could be interpreted as a warning, a guide or a path to safety when navigating mountain landscapes.

Cool eh?
