Opal is quite different from many other gemstones because it contains water within its structure.

Very dry conditions, strong heat and sudden temperature changes can contribute to fine fractures known as crazing.

It is particularly useful to know at this time of year, as temperatures drop and indoor heating starts going back on.

For cleaning, warm soapy water is the safest option. Steam and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided.

The blue and violet tones of tanzanite work beautifully at this time of year, especially against darker autumn colours.

A new piece we have just finished, and the photographs really do not do this one justice.

At the centre is a stunning 4ct blue-violet tanzanite, set in platinum with a half-moon diamond to either side.

We particularly like the small detail of the talon claws used to set the stones. It is subtle, but it adds something extra to the overall design while keeping the focus exactly where it should be.

When you think of sapphire, blue is probably the first colour that comes to mind.

Why does silver jewellery tarnish much faster for some people than others?

It’s one of those jewellery questions that has a more interesting answer than you might expect.

Sterling silver naturally reacts with compounds in its surroundings, while moisture, perspiration, cosmetics, perfume, chlorine and storage conditions can all affect how quickly tarnish appears.
