Let's kickstart another week with a great entry to the Gem-A Photographer of the Year Competition 2025, courtesy of Bruno Martinez 📸

Here we can see a heated magmatic ruby with an iridescent healed fracture. This stack of eight images was taken at 80x magnification (field of view 1.90 mm) with double-dual fibre-optic lighting; two are cold light, and the other two are warm light with a diffuser. A Leica MZ16 microscope, a Nikon Z5 camera and Motic darkfield were also used.

As Bruno explained in his entry, the iridescent liquid feather developed on three different levels, "showing how the beauty of nature can hide even where there is apparently a defect".
