Bealtaine (BAWL-tin-uh (Ulster dialect pronunciation))

Such a beautiful day to mark the beginning of summer.

Bealtaine is an ancient celtic festival that marks the time when the earth awakens, and the abundance of nature begins to unfurl in full bloom.

Traditionally, Bealtaine was a time when cattle were driven out to high pastures, making it a festival associated with pastoralism and the renewal of life on the land. This seasonal shift was marked not only by agricultural activities but also by a deep reverence for nature’s cycles. With the first flush of summer, communities would come together to celebrate the fertility of the land and its creatures, giving thanks for the prosperity that would come in the months ahead.

There has been a strong revival of the old celtic festivals and traditions. For some folks, they will travel to festivals to celebrate with other, especially on the Hill of Uisneach, and for some, it's quietly observing nature awaken from its wintery sleep in their gardens or on a meandering nature walk.

This aquamarine ring popped into my head when I was thinking about Bealtaine today. The brightness of the blue aquamarine which is associated with water. The yellow gold setting, the lighting of the fires, and warm golden sunshine. The Rippled band reminding us to look forward to those beautiful summer days spent at the beach, dipping in the sea.

Take a look around you this weekend to see nature awakening... it's rather magical to observe!

Comhghairdeas (congratulations) to K and M!

A pair of very unique wedding rings...

M emailed me asking if it would be possible to incorporate 1000 year old petrified wood that they had collected from a beach in Namibia where they got engaged in their wedding rings. When K and M came to the studio to show me the wood and discuss the possibilities, K mentioned he'd a small bottle of sand he had also collected that day. We all agreed that it would create some beautiful golden flecks to highlight the dark wood throughout the rings.

As the wood was so dry (and surprisingly very heavy) I suggested that it would be best to grind up a small piece, add the sand, and mix in resin to incorporate everything into their wedding rings.

We are all very happy with how the rings turned out!

If you are getting married soon and would like your rings to be more personal to you, get in touch to see what we can dream up!

I've kept this under my hat for about a year and a half! One Wednesday morning, I received an email asking if I could make a bespoke belt buckle for the midwife character in the highly anticipated How to Get to Heaven from Belfast by Lisa MaGee. It had to look like nurses' sissors and the two parts of the sissors had come together to close the belt.

After a good think about how to go about making the buckle, casting wasn't an option, and I had to make it completely by hand. It started off as two sheets of 10mm thick aluminium, I cut out the shapes, lots of carving with diamond tipped bits, lots of filing and almost a day of polishing, the buckle was finally ready to be handed over to the costume department to sew it onto the red belt.

I'm delighted to see it on the screen! We have been really enjoying watching the series, just the final episode to watch(no spoilers please!)

Have you been watching it too?

Remodelling your old treasures into new jewellery

Remodelling is a very popular service that I provide using your old jewellery to create something with all its beautiful sentimentality still intact. Old metal, be it gold or silver, can be melted down and forged into new shapes. Stones, new ones bought on travels, or your Grandma’s diamonds, can be reset into new contemporary pieces.

When you bring your old treasure to me, I will examine it and advise how best to use it for your new piece. A new design will be discussed. In some cases, a sample will be made for fitting.

With old metal, it will be smelted to be forged into sheet & wire or a solid cast to make your piece.

Gemstones will be carefully taken out of their old settings, cleaned, and securely set into your new piece. We can also discuss new stones that I can source for you to use in your new design.

The whole process from beginning to end can take from six to twelve weeks. It varies from each design and the materials that are provided.

Why not ask me to take a look at your old treasures to see what I can do?

The entire commissioning process can be conducted via email with the addition of Zoom or by appointment at my studio.

A lovely remodelling project with my client's own stones that her late husband had bought before his passing. They both love their gold jewellery so we used their own gold to create these gorgeous pieces for my client to wear her husband's treasures.

If you are thinking of a bespoke piece either through remodelling or new materials the books for Christmas and New Year's close this Friday 7th November so email [email protected] or send a wee message.

This time, a closer look at E's necklace.

E loved the bigger version of the Rock Surface pendant but wanted a bolder version for herself. Within E's old jewellery she had a few stones in the mix. We really liked the idea of setting the two pieces of amber and her pearl of to the side. E also had two gold chains and wanted to have a layered chain look, so I sourced the same style of chain in silver, solder the three together in the right place, and oxidising the silver.

It came together into this striking, beautiful, and unique necklace. As I have already said, another dream commission to work on and a pleasure to work with E on two unique pieces.

This year's bespoke commissioning for Christmas and New Years will be closing on Friday, 7th November. There is very limited space folks, so email [email protected]
