If customers are buying meaning… why isn’t storytelling a priority?

Our latest blog explores one of the biggest gaps in the UK jewellery industry right now - the difference between what customers want and what businesses are focusing on.

75% of customers are more likely to return to brands that tell a story. Yet fewer than 40% of businesses are prioritising it.

That gap? It’s a real commercial opportunity.

From how customers discover jewellery today to what actually builds loyalty, we break down what effective storytelling really looks like - and why staying quiet is costing more than you think.

Because jewellery isn’t just about what you sell… it’s about what it means.

There’s always a moment when it just feels… finished.

The proportions are right, the details sit exactly where they should, and everything comes together the way it was imagined - if not better.

It’s the result of every step before it: the ideas, the refinements, the craftsmanship, the care.

Because the finished piece isn’t just the end of the process - it’s the beginning of its life with the person it was made for.

When did customers stop asking what you have… and start asking what you can make?

In the latest blog from our Luxury in Flux research, we're exploring the shift happening across UK jewellery - where personalisation is no longer a “nice to have”, but an expectation.

From customers arriving with screenshots to the rise of self-gifting and milestone-driven purchases, the way people buy jewellery is changing. And the businesses adapting to that shift? They’re the ones pulling ahead.

With 77% of the trade saying personalisation will be critical in 2026, and craftsmanship still leading what customers value most, the opportunity is clear - but so is the challenge.

We break down what this looks like in practice, and how retailers and designers are building it into their workflow.

80% of consumers say they would pay more for sustainably sourced goods, according to PwC research. That figure has held consistently for years across multiple markets.

In the same period, sustainability has ranked seventh out of nine in what UK jewellery businesses think their customers care about.

Most of the trade already has the sourcing options; Recycled gold, Single Mine Origin, RJC certification and beyond. The question is less about what is being done and more about whether customers are hearing about it.

The Luxury in Flux report looks at that gap honestly and practically.

Most retailers have had the conversation where the finished piece doesn't quite match the render the customer signed off, and most of the time it isn't a mistake - at least not an intentional one.

A render is a picture of what a design is meant to be, drawn by software that has no reason to obey metal. Take a setting that looks right on screen, the claws are drawn to look elegant, because nothing in the render forces them to be thick enough to actually hold the stone. When the piece reaches the bench, the setter finds they won't grip, builds them up, and the proportions the customer fell for have quietly shifted. No one did anything wrong; the decision that changed the piece was simply made after the render was approved, by someone who never saw it.

That gap closes when the person who has to set the stone can look at the design while it's still a sketch and say the claws won't hold, better yet when the designers are close enough to manufacturing to know better in the first place - when testing is part of the process and the people that need to ask are working a few steps from the designer rather than opening a file weeks later in another building, which is the real reason an approved design ends up resembling the piece that arrives.

If you've ever been caught out by that gap, it's worth asking whoever makes your pieces how far apart the screen and the bench actually sit in their workshop.

Jewellery is more than a product. It’s a story that resonates.” - Ruth Faulkner, Managing Editor, Retail Jeweller

Here's just a few numbers to think about from the 25/26 Luxury in Flux report:

75% of customers are more likely to repurchase from brands that create personalised, story-driven experiences.
Brand storytelling ranked fourth in what the trade thinks their customers care about.
Only 38.9% are prioritising it for the year ahead.
Nearly one in five retailers told us it was not important at all.

That last figure is the one worth pausing on, because those retailers are not wrong that their customers care about craftsmanship and price, but are we missing how much the story around those things matters to the sale?

Luxury in Flux covers the storytelling gap in detail. Download completely free today.

Casting is where every piece begins ✨And no, before anyone asks that's not the washing up!

For over 75 years casting has been at the heart of what we do - bringing together precision, consistency and trusted experience to support jewellers at every stage.

As pioneers of lost wax casting in the UK, we’ve built our reputation on getting it right. Today, that same foundation is paired with modern technology and continuous refinement - so whether you’re creating a one-off piece or producing at scale, you can move forward with confidence.

From hand-carved wax and mould work to 3D printed models, we support a wide range of approaches across precious metal alloys - always with clean, consistent results.

And behind it all is a team who’s there to guide, advise and help solve problems along the way.

Because when the cast is right, everything that follows becomes that much easier. 💍

Two thirds of the UK trade now offer or use recycled gold. 21.6% offer or use Single Mine Origin, and 46.7% have changed their material choices in the last twelve months.

These are the sourcing decisions already being made.

What our research found is that the confidence to lead with those choices in customer conversations is not keeping pace. Only 34.7% of businesses feel very confident discussing sustainability and sourcing.

The story is there. It just needs telling, go behind the headlines with Luxury in Flux.

When did customers stop asking what you have and start asking whether you can make what they already have in mind?

For a lot of UK jewellers, that shift has already happened. Customers arrive with a screenshot. They know the stone shape, the metal, the setting. They want to know if you can bring it to life.

The 25/26 Luxury in Flux research, in conjunction with Retail Jeweller, found personalisation ranking second only to craftsmanship in what customers care about most. That's not all either, 77% of the trade says it will be very important in 2026, and 73.1% describe bespoke and custom services as a very important challenge right now.

The businesses that have built the workflow to meet that expectation are in a strong position. The report looks at what that looks like in practice for both retailers and designer/makers.
