I’m in Barnsley and those that know me will understand how thrilled I am to see this absolutely epic pedestrian person. Always guiding the way and never asking fir thanks these people drawn to guide people are part of our spaces.

Many things are there quietly to help us navigate, craft is definitely one of them. Looking forward to CHWA conference today to see and learn more examples of creative health.

Looking forward to attending Culture, Health and Well-being Alliance conference for three days. It starts today and the theme is common ground.

Here’s a segment of a collaborative work with two groups of people I worked on last year. We used colour as our common ground. There’s many colours in this piece, the colours for baby loss, favourite colours of fun holidays, the favourite colour of someone who is no longer here and many more.

Finding our common ground can be as simple as a shared memory or a colour. I’m interested in how the theme will be explored.

So we start a lovely October!

I’m not stitching I’m waiting for the post office to open!

I love these little squares, though. Been thinking about this a lot and digging through uses for these old designs

So the final prompt for seam collective is favourite post from someone else. I’ve put my favourite in my story (mainly because I don’t know how to put the post here!).

It’s brilliant to see how other people interpret the prompts.

So for my last post in this series I’d like to thank Frilly Industries is awesome! and B18leather together we are QUARTERMASTERS and this week we have worked together but separately to ensure that a last minute order can happen.

Working with others and promoting and supporting others is what this month of prompts has been about.

Todays prompt from seam collective asks us to think about what’s next.

Next week I will be CHWA annual conference listening, learning and sharing how artists as creative practitioners can be and are part of a more equitable society. Creativity can do us good, whether it’s swooning at a beautiful sycamore tree, deciding what route to take to work or deciding what socks to wear.

I’m continuing my stitch experiments with concrete or ceramic surfaces.

I’ll be Knit + Stitch in Harrogate in November running a workshop that looks at stitch and hand dyed yarn.

But mainly whatever I am doing next it will involve the one true global citizen, the needle. Stitch is a language all of its own.

I’ll be launching a Patreon type club in November which will include longer writing, exclusive patterns, thoughts and much more.

You can travel the world with a needle, but sometimes using it to do good on your door step can bring that world to you. Thanks for sticking with me throughout September!

Connect More takes me to some brilliant spaces. At the Neighbourhood Futures Festival this year I was set up in a small tent and people dropped by to spend a few minutes stitching with me. It was a small break from the many events happening in the day.

For an all too short weekend that tent was my place.

Also in the summer I went to Festival des Cabanes Annecy region in France. Architects build temporary cabins/structures with limited budget and resources. Each one I visited became a place to dwell for me. A place out of time.

Todays prompt from seam collective is place, where is your favourite? Is it somewhere you return to, live in or is it temporary?

I went to hear Trevor Beattie talk yesterday about fulfilling a life long dream of going into space. It was a pretty emotional hour.

The first Brummie in space. All the way from brummagem as my grandad would used to say.

The venue was Birmingham Council House, in the Chamber. I’ve been in there a few times but tonight it felt super special. Every detail looked pristine but full of energy, might have been to do with where I sat, that’s the light above me. Might have been to do with learning about earthlight right there in the centre of the city.

This stitching is from a series of words I created a while ago, maybe I’ll bring them out of retirement for one more spin around the moon.

Thanks Trevor I’ll never get tired of hearing you say “when I was in space”

When I first started thinking seriously about textiles as a “career” Royal Copenhagen had just released their Mega series. It took the famous blue pattern and blew it up in scale so the crockery only had part of the design on it.

I loved the idea of how they had played with scale and looked at embroidery patterns and how they could be scaled up for printing.

I bid on a box of embroidery transfers and inside was a whole woman’s life in knitting and stitching patterns. Her going away outfit, matinee jackets, baby bootees, school uniforms, embellishments for the home and finally more modern baby patterns for her grandchildren. A whole life making, a whole life of care. A true artist.

That box changed my direction and since then I have championed all women who make. Whether it’s for pleasure, people or sale.

So a change in scale prompted a change for me.

I had a great weekend keeping it local which is todays prompt from seam collective

Hyper local for me is the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Local is the city centre and Ladywood

On Friday I took Connect More to the street for BrumPark(ing)Day an initiative that reclaims parking spaces for one day a year. I used stitching to ask questions about what small thing in Birmingham should not go unnoticed. Lots of answers but the kindness of the people was one my favourite. It was brilliant to work with QUARTERMASTERS a local collective which I love being part of.

On Saturday I walked down the road to Museum of Jewellery Quarter and ran a bargello workshop at their brilliant Craft and Culture space. Everyone created fantastic work, using 12 count interlock and a selection of colours.

I love keeping it local mainly because I can dash back if I’ve forgotten anything! But mainly because I spend a lot of time taking stitch to where people live so it’s great to welcome people to my “manor”.

Todays prompt from seam collective is “Battle”.

This is a tough prompt because many people are battling terrible illnesses, persecution, loss, fear and worry. And the thing is we never really know about it.

Walking around a city we see so many people, we glance maybe smile but we don’t know what they are going through.

So I’m asking you today to be a little kinder. Whether you are held up in a queue because someone can’t find their purse, delayed behind a talker at the checkout or held up in any small way by others. Take a step back, we don’t know what each person is battling.

We are all walking round with gaps in our lives, a little like these pavements but if you stop and look, there’s a story behind each of them.
