New to our window today is this beautiful antique old cut diamond star pendant. This handmade piece harks back to a time when jewellery was designed to be versatile, and this piece comes with the gold fittings so that it can also be worn as a brooch if required.

Crafted in silver with yellow gold backing, this celestial 12 rayed star has an estimated total diamond weight of 1.20ct. The use of silver for the settings is typical for the antique age of the piece where the white metal was used to enhance the colour of the diamonds.

New to our window today is this beautiful handcrafted 9ct yellow gold and morganite pendant. Made by our in-house Goldsmith, this unique piece contains a 1.57ct cushion cut morganite; the curves of the cushion cut enhance the delicate pink of the stone, making it a jewel that looks good enough to eat!

Morganite is a member of the beryl family, alongside it's more well known counterparts of emerald and aquamarine. These gems are famed for their colour, with the pink of morganite being caused by the presence of manganese. With a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and a vitreous lustre that reflects light and helps creates sparkle these stones make fabulous pieces of jewellery.

The rich buttery yellow of the gold looks beautiful alongside the pretty pink, combining to make a very attractive and individual piece of jewellery. Pictured on a 9ct yellow gold diamond cut curb chain, the chain can be removed to add one of your selection to make it a more personal piece of jewellery.

Fresh from our Goldsmith's bench peg this week is this beautifully crafted 9ct gold diamond solitaire ring.

Designed to be sleek and simple this piece has a 9ct yellow gold Tiffany style shank, with the focal point being the central 0.25ct natural diamond. The whiteness of the diamond is enhanced by the 9ct white gold bezel setting which protects the edge of the stone whilst giving a modern and contemporary feel.

Completed by UK hallmarks from Birmingham Assay Office, including our Buck & Co Sponsors mark, this is a wearable piece of jewellery designed for daily wear whilst still being beautiful. Apologies for the lack of recent posts, and many thanks to you all for your patience whilst we had a summer break. Since we returned we have been rushed off our feet on the shop floor, welcoming back many familiar faces but also pleased to meet and greet many new clients so welcome to you all!

We've been busy with a lot of orders for bespoke wedding rings, lots of jewellery repairs and a large number of watch repairs. Add in some civic regalia work, some bespoke Christmas orders (for some very organised clients who like to get things done early) and a large number of requests from clients for rubies and sapphires it’s been a very hectic month.

Time to share a piece which left us recently; our client asked us to remodel her sentimental inherited gold into a 18ct yellow gold diamond trilogy ring. The original gold was a mixture of different carats so our Goldsmith melted and alloyed it to 18ct. He then handmade all component parts; the shank, the bezel settings for the diamonds and the wrap around curves which echoed the original hand painted design. With a total diamond weight of 1.00ct, the three brilliant cut diamonds were bezel set to protect the stones, completing a totally unique handmade piece which will be treasured as a family heirloom for many years to come.

There will be a change to our opening hours in the coming weeks as we are heading toward our summer break.

We are open this week as usual, and will then be closed from Sunday 2nd August to Monday 18th August, and will be reopening on Tuesday 18th August at 9.30am.

New to our Buck & Co stock and fresh from our Goldsmith's bench is this breathtaking 1.50ct old mine cut natural diamond solitaire ring.

Crafted by our Goldsmith in 18ct gold with yellow gold shank and white gold settings, this ring has been made in a very traditional style to complement the unique and historic diamond it contains.

The latest trend in diamond jewellery focuses on the antique cuts, and celebrates the uniqueness of each and every stone. This is very much a reaction against the rows of identical and characterless 'lab grown' diamonds seen in many jewellers windows (not at Buck & Co). We are lucky to have residing with us at the moment two fabulous old mine cut diamonds. Our regular clients will know that antique jewellery is one of our passions, and old mine cut diamonds are a quintessential part of high quality antique pieces.

These diamonds were cut by hand before the arrival of modern cutting tools and without the benefit of the computer programmes which are used now to assess the best cut for each diamond crystal. The old cut was designed to echo the natural shape of diamond octahedral crystal in order to minimise cutting; diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth and are difficult to cut, particularly without electric tools, or the lasers used in modern diamond manufacture.

Old mine cuts are characterised by a cushion shape with rounded corners, a high crown and small table. An easily visible feature is the culet, the facet added on the bottom of the stone which is lacking in modern brilliant cut diamonds.

These stones were designed to look their best by candlelight, and provide a vintage feel to any piece of jewellery. As these are cut by hand each of these beautiful stones is a unique and individual piece, a survivor from the past when many have been recut in recent times to more modern cuts.

These beautiful stones are 1.50ct and 2.09ct respectively, with the 2.09ct stone having been reported on by the GIA for independent third party assessment and has the appropriate laser inscribed inscription.

A recent addition that our Goldsmith has made to our Buck & Co stock is this 18ct gold and 0.60ct natural diamond eternity ring.

Crafted from 18ct gold throughout, this beautiful and timeless ring features seven round brilliant cut natural diamonds particularly selected for their brightness. Our Goldsmith mounted these diamonds in claws to allow light to access the stones for extra scintillation and fire.

This ring is completed by full UK hallmarks including our personal Buck & Co Sponsors Mark, a legal requirement providing peace of mind to our clients and third party reassurance of the fineness of the gold with which this piece has been made.

This ring is currently a size P, a full resizing service can be provided if required.

Our client has kindly given permission for us to share the details of a commission piece which left us recently. This handmade solid link belcher chain was made with a combination of the client's own gold and sentimental family pieces of gold which our client had inherited.

Our Goldsmith melted the gold in batches and then processed the gold through the rolling mills many times, to create solid D section wire. The wire was annealed to soften the gold and make it pliable enough to be formed into individual solid links, which were then soldered together to form the chain. This sounds simple, but requires precision and experience to form a chain that that is robust enough to stand up to the rigors of daily wear, whilst remaining beautiful.

The finished chain was completed with full hallmarking at Birmingham Assay Office (including our Goldsmiths personal Sponsors Mark) and was then polished and cleaned before heading back to the owner in its new format. This piece is the ultimate in jewellery recycling, turning a range of differing pieces of gold into one wearable and unisex piece of jewellery suitable for any occasion.

It has been a hive of activity since we moved to our new premises, and we cannot believe how the time has flown! We are now comfortably settled in and would like to thank everyone who has dropped in to see us, and for all the positive feedback on our new space.

We have been busy with civic regalia restoration, preparing pieces for summer weddings and engagements and doing some fabulous bespoke pieces for our clients (more details to follow when we have time). Our Goldsmith has also been creating some fabulous new diamond pieces for our Buck & Co stock.

We are excited to have managed to obtain some beautiful old cut diamonds, as our regular clients will know they are a particular passion of ours. All are between 1ct and 2ct and we have some european old cuts, and some old mine cuts. These do not stay with us long, so do pay us a visit to view these beautiful stones.
