Some exciting news to share with you all is that when we re-open on Tuesday 5th May we will be in our new premises at number 8 Market House Arcade.

We have had a wonderful time in number 12 but needed a little more space for both us and our clients, so when the chance came up to move we decided to take the plunge.

Moving has been just as stressful as if we were going 1000 miles but we would like to thank our patient landlord for his support and encouragement, and all our fellow traders in the Market House Arcade, Bodmin for their support and for putting up with noise and disruption. Our thanks also the local companies who have made it possible: Phoenix Print for their incredible signage, Smith of Bodmin Removals for making light work of all our heavy glassware, Bodmin Flooring & Bed Centre for top quality service and for a beautiful build.

Most of all we would like to thank our wonderful clients. We have enjoyed getting to know you all, some of you for many years now and some more recently, but it has been an honour and a privilege to work for you all. We cannot wait to step into this new chapter with you all and we will be back to our benches and ready to welcome you into number 8 on 5th May!

As it is now April, it is time to celebrate the birthstone of the month which is the incomparable diamond.

One of the most prized and most traded gemstones, the diamond has exceptional lustre, brilliance and fire which combine to give diamonds the irresistible sparkle we all love. Diamonds are an excellent gemstone choice in jewellery as they are the hardest known natural substance on earth. This is reflected in the name 'diamond' which comes from the Greek 'adamas'; the unconquerable!

Diamonds have been used in jewellery since antiquity, when the natural crystals were polished rather than cut as the technology to cut these hard stones did not yet exist. Pictured are some diamonds in their natural crystalline forms; a diamond twinned crystal known as a macle, a diamond in a cubic form, and another in octahedral form. Shown next to a pair of diamond studs crafted by our Goldsmith, it illustrates the difference that the cutting and polishing process makes to these beautiful gemstones.

Made from carbon, a pure diamond will be colourless but trace elements can add colouring resulting in green, blue and yellow diamonds. The oldest diamonds formed 3.5 billion years ago, whilst younger stones have been dated to 660 million years ago. Formed deep within the earth's mantle under conditions of intense heat and pressure, diamonds are driven to the surface of the earth by molten magma travelling through volcanic pipes at super sonic speeds. Each and every natural diamond has had an exciting journey through time and space to make it into a piece of jewellery!

For our new and bespoke jewellery Buck & Co supply clients with natural and conflict free diamonds, and we are pleased to offer a range of diamonds which have been independently certified by the Gemological Institute of America, so you can relax and enjoy your purchase. This diamond grading process reassures the client not only that their diamonds are natural, but also verifies the colour, cut and clarity of the stone all of which are important factors in the overall valuation of the piece. All this information is presented on an official GIA certificate for each stone.

Pictured are a selection of GIA graded and certified diamonds as selected by our gemmologist, mounted in stunning pieces made by our in-house Goldsmith. These include a 1.00ct diamond and platinum moi et toi ring, and a 0.50ct diamond 18ct white gold pendant. Visit us at our shop in Bodmin for a viewing, or to to see other stones which are available or to discuss your personal bespoke requirements.

A recent addition to our stock is this stunning ring, crafted by our in-house Goldsmith and featuring a total of 1.0ct of GIA graded natural brilliant cut diamonds.

Created in platinum, a precious metal robust enough to hold diamonds of this size and quality, this ring has been designed in the style of a traditional 'Moi et Toi' ring. French for 'you and me', this design became very fashionable in 1796 when Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine with a two stone diamond and sapphire ring. With the two stones symbolising the joining of two hearts, it is a style which has remained popular ever since.

Our Buck & Co 'Moi et Toi' ring features two 0.50ct natural diamonds giving a total of 1.0ct, which have been graded by the Gemological Institute of America as G, VS2. These stunning stones have been laser inscribed with identifying numbers and will come with their official GIA certificates. Set in traditional rex settings which allow light access to the stones, these diamonds have scintillation and fire and are extremely eye catching.

Handcrafted in platinum this ring bears UK hallmarks from Birmingham Assay Office, including our personal Buck & Co Sponsors Mark. This ring is currently a size M, but can be resized if required. Viewing at our shop in Bodmin is welcomed, or for more information PM or call on 07818 938699. £5995.00 inclusive of VAT.

It is time to celebrate the birthstone of the month, which for March is the aquamarine. This beautiful sky-blue to sea-green gemstone bears a name deriving from the Latin for water 'aqua' and for sea, 'marina'. Legend has it that this beautiful stone is the treasure of mermaids, and it was traditionally carried by sailors to keep them safe at sea.

Aquamarine is a variety of the gemstone Beryl, which also includes emeralds, and the less well known pink gemstone morganite, and the yellow gemstone heliodor. It grows in prismatic crystals, and can grow to large sizes. It occurs in many locations across the world including Brazil, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and the USA. Brazil has long been known as the world's top source for aquamarine, including the world's largest specimens such as the Dom Pedro aquamarine. Mined in 1980, at 10363.00ct it is the world's largest cut aquamarine. Cut into a 'fantasy' cut featuring curved facets and grooves, it took six months of hand cutting by the gem cutter Bernd Munsteiner to create the magnificent obelisk that can now be seen in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

Aquamarine is well suited to use in jewellery as it is a durable stone. Care is needed when working with these gemstones in the jewellery workshop however, as heat can cause them to discolour. It is recommended to care for these pieces gently, washing in warm soapy water, without the use of abrasive chemicals that may damage the stone. Protect these fabulous stones from sharp knocks as they can fracture.

Pictured is a beautiful aquamarine, diamond and 18ct white gold ring, a commission piece designed by Buck & Co. The aquamarine was selected by our clients from a selection sourced by our Gemmologist, and it was then crafted into this stunning piece by our in-house Goldsmith.

Thank you all for your patience whilst we had a few days off earlier this week, and it has been lovely to welcome you all back. Time now to share a special commission piece which left us recently.

One of our regular clients requested our Goldsmith to make this beautiful SOS bracelet for her as an alternative to the commercial stainless steel version she has been wearing for many years. She decided it was time for a change, and a chance to wear something a little more beautiful (whilst still being practical and suitable for everyday wear).

Custom designed and hand crafted by our in-house Goldsmith in 9ct yellow gold, this water resistant gold canister is large enough to take a piece of paper with life saving information written on it. The 9ct gold lid is cleverly attached to the chain so that it cannot be separated and lost, and the whole piece is completed with clear and legible engraving that clearly denotes its purpose.

Beautiful enough to wear out to dinner but also practical and functional, this beautiful piece was completed by hallmarks from Birmingham Assay Office including our Buck & Co. Jewellers, Goldsmiths and Diamond Mounters Sponsors Mark.

It was a liberating moment for our lovely client when she tried this piece on for the first time, as it represents freedom from the utilitarian stainless steel expanding bracelet that she has worn for many years. This beautifully thought out and hand crafted piece is a good illustration of how jewellery can be both beautiful and functional.
