Next day delivery has become so normal for all of us and I’m guilty myself of leaving shopping to the last minute. But small businesses usually rely on Royal Mail who are swamped this time of year, so delays are inevitable. Most small businesses will add a margin to their delivery time to ensure delivery by Christmas so check those last delivery dates if you’ve had your eye on something 🎄

It’s getting increasingly harder to feel like the choices we make and the actions we take as individuals can really have any kind of an impact. And yes, without big business, industry and world leaders making significantly different decisions our impact will remain very very small on the scale of things.

But our power as consumers is significant, not only because it casts a vote for the retailers and type of consumerism we want to see. Because every time you put your money behind a small business you directly impact not only an individual but also the small circle they represent, be that their employees, the services they use, their suppliers or their family members.

So don’t be disheartened, your decisions have an impact even if it’s only for one or two individuals whose businesses may not be here this time next year if it weren’t for the actions of people like you ✨

I don’t know about you but it increasingly feels like I’m seeing more and more of the same, both on the high street and here on Instagram. The latest trends weaving their way into monthly or even weekly “releases” and influencers promoting the same “must have” items.

Coming across truly authentic designs that are also produced to a high standard, both in terms of quality and ethics is a breath of fresh air. But it’s noisy out there (and in here) and finding those gems (excuse the pun) is hard work.

As we hear of more and more fantastic independent designers and shops shutting their doors, it has never been more important to be intentional with our purchases. Voting with our money for the kinds of businesses and products we want to see around in the long term.

So let’s adorn ourselves not only in fabric and jewels, but in our ideals too ✨

Black Friday is a weird old time for small businesses, especially those whose purpose is centred around slow considered purchases. On one hand, it’s a great time of year to boost sales, but on the other it is almost impossible to compete with the offerings of retail giants.

This year we have made a decision not to participate, we can’t compete with Black Friday for three reasons.

1 | small businesses do not operate with margins that allow for drastic reductions in prices
2 | a core value at Nuri is to promote independent handcrafted jewellery that has been produced fairly for a fair price
3 | we don’t want to, because we don’t promote over-consumption

So this Black Friday, remember a bargain is only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway. And more importantly, support products and shops that align with your values.
