“Is it waterproof?” is probably the question I get asked more than any other in the shop.
And I understand why. We all want beautiful things that last.
But I think there’s a bigger conversation to be had about what we actually want from our jewellery.
At Aquila, I choose recycled sterling silver and 14ct gold vermeil because I believe in the beauty and value of precious metals. We use a thicker layer of gold, designed with durability in mind, because I want our customers to enjoy their pieces for years to come.
But I won’t promise that they’re indestructible, or tell you to wear them in the sea, swimming pool or shower without a second thought.
Precious metals deserve a little care. And sometimes, I think we’ve become so used to wanting everything to be effortless that we’ve forgotten that looking after something can be part of its value.
I’m not interested in making disposable jewellery, or jewellery that needs to promise it will survive absolutely everything.
I want to make pieces you fall in love with. Pieces you wear on ordinary days, take on adventures and associate with people, places and memories.
Jewellery that becomes part of your story.
Waterproof jewellery has its place. So does jewellery made from precious metals. And I think there’s room for both.
