Gold watches have never really been my thing, but this 18ct yellow gold sub date ref 16618 did make me question my position. This watch is over twenty-eight years old, and it's aged well. Mainly due to the fact it's been so well looked after. It would have set you back a sade over £12K new at the time. Today, you'll be paying out well over £20K.

No working visit to Pembrokeshire is ever complete without a walk around Tenby. It's my spiritual home and I never tire of views or sea air. The fit for today's stroll is Breitling Aerospace. The titanium case and bracelet aren't for everyone, but I love the way it wears, and the dual display covers every need. It is a brilliant everyday watch.

These days, when I client says their watch comes with 'everything', they often mean a box, instructions and warranty papers. But in the case of this Rolex Sea-Dweller ref 16600, it really did have everything! Period correct box, both swing tags, both instruction books, anchor, dive book, adjustment tool, the works. It's probably one of the best examples I have seen of this model in years. And to think, the client got this on interest-free credit at the time, and it only cost £2,270. Oh, how the world has changed.

Diamonds like this are why I have such a cynical opinion of certain aspects of the insurance industry.

An insurance company is only liable for what you can prove you had. And the instance of this, the client could prove the carat weight. So the insurance company replaced the diamond that was lost with one significantly lower in quality but equal carat weight on paper.

Here's a fun fact: the carat weight of a diamond is not its size but its physical weight. So, two stones can have the same weight but look different in size.

Diamonds need to be cut to specific dimensions and angles to achieve the sparkle they're known for. If not, the stones look flat and dull and are consequently less expensive. This diamond is carrying too much weight around its middle, the girdle. There are other aspects to the cut, but that very thick band around the middle is the most striking. Had the stone been cut properly, it would have been considerably lighter in weight. But this diamond will have been considerably cheaper than a well-cut diamond of equal weight.

When an insurance company is only interested in settlement savings it tarnishes the reputation of the wider insurance industry. And clients end up feeling they've been short-changed.

The insurance industry, like every industry has it's good and it's bad. And you get what you pay for. I can understand; when it comes to home insurance, you'll look at different providers and wonder why one is more expensive when, on paper, they appear to be the same. Well, it is diamonds like this that are the difference. Inexpensive policies are only cheap at the outset and often a false economy, as you'll be paying for it if you ever need to make a claim.

Much like a parachute, you don't want to find out your valuation or insurance policy is substandard when you need them the most.

I've never regretted a watch ive bought, just the ones I didn't or sold. And the steel ceramic Rolex GMT-Master II ref 116710LN is probably joint 1st in regretted selling stakes. It was such a good allrounder. It was purchased at a time when the Rolex market was very different to how it is now. And although the market for these has cooled tremendously over the past few years. Their pre-owned value is still significantly north of what they cost when new. I should have held on to mine for a decade longer than I did.

It's no secret that I do a lot of traveling with my job. But it never ceases to amaze me that it's cheaper to fly around the UK, than it is to get the train.

I've never been the biggest fan of the modern Rolex Turn-O-Graph as a watch. The adjustable bezel made sense when the watch was originally released way back in 50's and the original models are classics. But for me, the modern version like this 16263 reference, just didn't work. And from the volume of sales, it didn't work for a lot of people. Which weirdly now works in its favour, as it is one of the rarer modern Rolexes. It's still not my thing, but it's more interesting than a standard datejust.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Jewellery Valuers Association conference, a truly global event that brings together experts from the watch, jewellery, diamond, gemstone, valuing and insurance professions. The international scope of this annual three-day event never fails to impress me.

It was a full on event for me, as I was there as a delegate, but also in a teaching capacity. I was delighted to help present an HNW workshop with , ran workshops on watch valuing and establishing the correct replacement markets, and was part of a Q&A panel with esteemed colleagues. Julia Griffith from , Alberto and Mikko from , , Stuart Robertson from Gemworld International and Al Gilbertson I also attended workshops on grading fancy-coloured diamonds and jewellery manufacturing, amongst many others, as well as main presentations.

For me, the absolute highlight of the event was the honour of presenting the Valuer of the Year award, which I won last year, to this year's winner, . It was a genuine pleasure to be able to pass it on to such a worthwhile recipient.

I can't wait for next year's conference.

I've recently finished "The Inconvenient Truth about the World's First Waterproof Watch" by Stan Czubernat, and it's a brilliant book. It puts a torpedo below the waterline of Rolex's claim of inventing the world's first waterproof watch. It's also incredibly well-written and easy to read for anyone not uber familiar with watches. The world needs more books like this that debunk marketing myths perpetuated by watch brands. The book has now taken up residency on the office coffee table for my clients to read. For those that don't know, my office coffee table is where only the very best books go.

In my opinion, the Tudor Submariner ref 75090 is a considerably more interesting and economically viable alternative to the same-age Rolex Submariner. It also has a meter's first dial.

Given the fact that Rolex produced the Oyster Quartz Datejust for well over two decades, you don't see many of them around. Well, not in the UK, at least. I'd say I see somewhere in the region of twenty to thirty normal Datejusts for every Quartz that crosses my desk. This is one of the main reasons I really like this style of watch.

How do we know this stone isn't a diamond? Because it says so on the stone! In this case, it says 'Swarovski Zirconia'. Sadly, this ring and stone were purchased second-hand as an 'included' natural diamond. If the deal seems too good to be true, it likely is. Always take your time when deciding whether to purchase a piece of jewellery, and don't be pressured into making a decision.

In my opinion, the 16030 Rolex Datejust with engine turn bezel is a vastly underrated watch. It certainly doesn't get the same level of love that its white gold fluted bezel sibling.
