I’ve just noticed that in my last post I put the coloured drawing that I made to work from, but not the finished 3-D coat of arms, so here it is!

I’m finishing off jobs for past customers who want more castings of their coats of arms before I close down that side of the business. This is a coat of arms that I redesigned from a very rough sketch which was all the information that remained. I made a bronze version, but the next plan is to do a coloured one. We have worked out a ‘best guess’ at the colours and I have added them in watercolour to a print of my original pencil drawing.

My swansong! This pair of coats of arms for Neath Town Council are the last that I will make from scratch after many decades in the business. They are 750mm high and were collected on Friday. I’ll continue making emblems from moulds that I have already made, mostly royal coats of arms until I close the business in June this year. Then in September I shall be starting the MA fine art course at Bath Spa University with a plan to pursue painting as my main activity from here on. YOLO!

I’ve finished modelling the pattern for the Neath coat of arms (750cm high). It’s quite a momentous occasion for me because it’s the last commercial sculpture pattern that I will make having decided to close the company to concentrate on fine art. Between now and June 2022 I shall continue to make royal coats of arms or anything with existing moulds but no new commissions. Then in September 2022 I start a post graduate MA fine art course at Bath Spa University and then see where life takes me from there. What an adventure!

The Prussian coat of arms is now finished and sent to my customer. Was he pleased with it? Well, as well as the payment he sent me an excellent bottle of champagne and truffles!

I have included the ancient sketch that was the only existing record of the arms, and the working drawing I made from it.

And... the same customer has commissioned me for a large oil painting on canvas! (To see my paintings: www.Facebook.com/Bryanspaintings). More of that later!

The original Plasticine sculptural pattern for the Prussian coat of arms is finished now and I have built a cardboard fence around it to pour the liquid silicone rubber. The sword that goes at the top I have made, and will mould, separately. The blade is filed out of a piece of aluminium.

On the Prussian coat of arms I have now attached the shield to the modelling board - I had been modelling the details on the shield separately, but they are pretty much finished. That means that I can carry on modelling the bottom part of the helmet where it overlaps the shield, so I can get a better idea of the overall shape of the coat of arms.

More progress on the heraldic shield - I have modelled one lion’s head and one wheatsheaf, made a silicone rubber mould, and made castings of each in polyurethane resin. Then I shaped the back of the castings to fit the contour of the shield and glued them in place. The trefoil I modelled directly onto the shield. So that’s all ready for making the main mould. Next I have to make the scroll that goes with it.

Two major jobs moving forward together at the moment. I’ve done more work on the shield with the stork for the Prussian coat of arms, and also moulded a shield, applied the raised ‘chief’ and ‘chevron’, and started modelling the wheatsheaf and lion’s head for another private commission.

On the Prussian coat of arms I have prepared the shield and started the modelling of the bull rushes on it, but it is not fixed to the board yet, so I can take it off and take it anywhere to work on it, which is quite handy. The crown is pretty much finished on the main part of the modelling.
