Introducing the Vale of Pewsey Hoard, found near Pewsey in Wiltshire by three metal detectorists in 2020, 160 Roman silver coins, consisting of siliquae & miliarense from Constantius II (AD 323-361) to Honorius (AD 393-423).

Dating to the end of the Roman era in Britain this find and others represent a turbulent time for the Roman Empire and its citizens.

The hoard was declared Treasure, subsequently disclaimed then returned to the finders & landowner who chose to sell the hoard, making the coins available to private collectors around the world for which we are most grateful.

We have produced an interesting information booklet, a copy of which will be sent with each coin and will also be available on our website ‘News and Articles’ section.

This looks at the find and the wider background to the area and coinage in Late Roman Britain, a fascinating chapter in history.

Today’s upload contains a broad range of English Medieval coinage starting with a Sceatta dating to the 7th Century AD and ending with a silver crown of Queen Anne, this historically important coin bears the letters VIGO below her bust, marking that it was made from silver bullion captured from the Spanish in Vigo bay, a signification British naval victory.

Between these coins we see a penny of queen Cynethryth, wife of king Offa (AD 757-796), also historically important as this was the first time an English monarch struck coinage for their wife.

Next up a run of late Anglo-Saxon pennies from mints such as Colchester & Cambridge, followed by a Norman coins of William II Rufus, killed in a ‘hunting accident’ in the New Forest which was most convenient for his successor and an unusual provincial coin of king Stephen struck during the first English Civil War.

Gold and silver coinage of Henry IV is included (not often we can say that as both are rare) and a lovely half noble of Edward III, who introduced gold back in to Britain’s coinage after being absent for hundreds of years.

Our latest upload comprises a diverse offering from the Ancient British series. Some call them Iron Age coins, some Celtic, but whatever you call them, there's no denying their beauty!

These miniature masterpieces were struck 2,000 years ago by people who lived in mud huts. Not only that, but they then managed to survive buried in the ground for 2,000 years before being rediscovered, allowing us to admire them today.

What an awesome journey and tangible link to history.

Today we have added a good selection of Roman coins, including a selection from an old collection of silver denari from the Roman Republic, the earliest Roman silver coins available.

Followed by a good selection of 1st Century denari, high-grade bronze follies from the Tetrarchy & House of Constantine.

Ending with a silver siliqua from one of the less successful emperors, Flavius Victor from the late 4th Century AD who ruled the Western empire for around a year!

This Belgae “Cogwheel Smiler” Gold Quarter Stater, struck in the 1st century BC, is an exceptionally rare type with only 8 examples known. Featuring the distinctive turf cutter motif alongside cogwheels, and a beautifully stylised horse beneath a floral sun and comet, the design perfectly captures the bold imagination of Celtic art.

Rarely offered for sale and believed to be closely related to the famous Cheriton Smiler staters, this piece is not only historically important but visually unforgettable.
