The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Team, which has worked on a number of harrowing jobs over the past year, has won the Team of the Year Award at the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards.

The team is involved in the difficult and often traumatic job of recovering and identifying deceased people after an incident with multiple fatalities.

Last year they were part of a large team that assisted after the house fire in Stroud on Boxing Day, where the wife and two children of a serving Gloucestershire Police officer tragically died.

The officers spent a month at the site.

Avon & Somerset Police Federation Chair Tom Gent said: “These dedicated and skilled officers do a job in policing that is not often recognised, but which is immensely important and gives great comfort to bereaved families.”

The lead sponsor for the Awards was Axon.

Also sponsoring were Serve and Protect Credit Union, Gallagher, Niche, Uniform Mortgages, Accord, Police Friendly, Warren & Co, Ginge Tours, Bluline Health, No1 Copperpot Credit Union and Police Mortgages.

An officer who shows exceptional care for victims as well as her own police colleagues has won the Compassionate Officer of the Year Award at the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards.

PC Sophie Cruse works for Op Bluestone, investigating r**e and serious s*x offences.

She excels in her care and compassion for people, dealing sensitively with deeply traumatised victims and earning their trust.

One example is when she supported a victim in a very complicated non-recent childhood s*xual abuse case. PC Cruse spoke with her multiple times over several weeks, building rapport and trust with her until she felt able to visit the interview suite. She then spent several hours talking to her, explaining her options and making the victim feel in control of her story, and supported to tell it if she chose to.

PC Cruse also goes out of her way to look out for her colleagues and protect their welfare in what can be a challenging work environment. She explained: “We look after people day in and day out, so I recognise how important it is to look after ourselves and each other…to just keep an eye on your colleagues and notice if they're feeling a bit down.

“I’ll say, let's have a wander around the car park, let's get some fresh air. We call it a ‘lappers’, a lap around the car park, and I think that's a good starting point. And then it would be raising it to supervisors if I think it needs to, or signposting to wider places.”

PC Cruse has recently trained to be a welfare officer. She said: “I've taken on two officers who I'm supporting. I support police officers through misconduct cases or any investigation that they may be going through, and offer guidance on the investigation process.”

She said it felt “incredible” to receive an award, “because I know how amazing my colleagues are, and everyone that I've worked with”.

Avon & Somerset Police Federation Chair Tom Gent said: “Sophie is an exceptional officer who goes above and beyond to serve and protect the public, and also looks out for her colleagues in a difficult and often traumatic area of work.

“We are very proud of her work and she is well deserving of this Award.”

PC Cruse will attend the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards 2026 on Thursday 15 October.

A dedicated and proactive officer who has spent 23 years as a response PC and is passionate about serving the community has won the Unsung Hero of the Year Award at the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards.

PC Matthew Bond is currently a response officer in Burnham-on-Sea.

One colleague said they were “in awe of his dedication”, explaining: “From arresting offenders while off-duty buying flowers for his wife, to staying late most shifts to ensure the job is done and done well, PC Bond’s knowledge, expertise and ability to know when something isn’t right is second to none. He is what policing should be about – a strong moral compass, proactive nature and never complaining about the less-appealing tasks the job demands.”

PC Bond said he’d remained a PC for 23 years because it was his “dream job” from when he was at school. He said: “There are so many different roles in the police, but to me, the one true core role is being a police officer on response, in uniform, responding to calls, being out on the street, where it's at, where it's happening.

“I'm fortunate to still love my job and love my role. Being part of such a great team and the community that I'm lucky enough to police keeps me energised. Working with a younger workforce helps me stay energised, because there's constantly good energy in the office, there's enthusiasm, officers are keen, they want to learn, they want to go out and get stuck in.”

When asked what he liked most about being a police officer, he said: “I guess it's the adventure, really. You never know where you're going to go, you're always dealing with something different.

“Some of the calls might be more frequent, for example, answering domestic calls. It could be a disturbance on a Friday or Saturday night, anti-social behaviour, right up to a call where someone's armed themselves with a weapon, someone's been hurt, and everything in between.

“Sometimes it can be really challenging, particularly balancing family life and the workload, not to mention some of the calls that we go to as well. They can really test your policing skills. But in general, the rewards often outweigh the challenges.”

When he heard he was receiving the Federation’s Unsung Hero Award, PC Bond said: “It's a great feeling to be recognised. Humbling, as well. You're working with so many great people, day in, day out, and I feel that everyone does such a great job.”

Avon & Somerset Police Federation Chair Tom Gent said: “Matthew has never sought glory, he just does an excellent job every day, catching offenders and serving communities. He’s a popular member of the team, who helps boost morale and is an excellent role model for younger-in-service officers.”

PC Bond will attend the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards 2026 on Thursday 15 October.

An officer who single-handedly pursued and detained an offender despite having just been assaulted has won the Bravery Award at the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards.

On Sunday 4 January 2026, police received a call about a man suffering a mental health episode and shouting threats to oncoming traffic and members of the public.

PC Emma Richards was dispatched single-crewed to the scene, which was by the side of a busy road. She approached the man and could tell he was in a mental health crisis. A family friend was with him, and she told PC Richards his name and said he had lost his medication.

PC Richards recalled: “I suggested potentially taking him to hospital to get his medication sorted, but prior to doing that I wanted to establish who he was, to work out the risk.” So she attempted to speak to and engage with the man, but “out of nowhere” he suddenly punched PC Richards to the side of her mouth.

PC Richards said: “It caused me to step out into the road, after I lost balance. Luckily it was quite heavy traffic, so I stood in front of a car that was waiting in the traffic. The initial force knocked my earpiece out, so I called up for more units.”

PC Richards’ lip had split and was bleeding, and she was later found to have loosened teeth and concussion.

The man then ran into a nearby property, and PC Richards could hear screaming and shouting coming from inside.

She said: “Obviously, I had concerns about what was happening inside – other people's safety, and my safety as well, if he was to come back out with anything, having potentially gone into a kitchen. So my priority was to detain the man as quickly as I could to protect myself, but also members of the public.

“So I made sure I had other units coming, then entered the property, and the man started walking towards me with his hands up. I arrested the man for the assault on myself, and then got him outside the property while I waited for more units to arrive.

“It was at this point that I could feel the blood trickling down my face, and it was maybe a five-minute wait until backup came, at which point they stepped in, and then I stepped away and realised the extent of my injuries.” PC Richards was taken to hospital and treated for her split lip.

The offender was taken into custody and charged with assault ABH, but eventually the court gave him an absolute discharge.

When PC Richards heard she had won a Federation Bravery Award, she said: “I was surprised, to be honest. I feel like you do this job not to be thanked or recognised. It was an incident that affected me, but I felt very honoured to get it for what I felt was just doing my job. I can't thank my team and my supervisors enough for their support.”

Avon & Somerset Police Federation Chair Tom Gent said: “Despite the high risk and pressure and already having been violently assaulted, Emma did not hesitate to detain this offender, helping to protect the public, the offender themselves and other officers. Her courage, resilience and unwavering commitment to duty exemplify the highest standards of policing and make her truly deserving of recognition.”

PC Richards will attend the Avon & Somerset Police Federation Recognition Awards 2026 on Thursday 15 October.

The lead sponsor for the Awards is Axon.

Also sponsoring are Serve and Protect Credit Union, Gallagher, Niche, Uniform Mortgages, Accord, Police Friendly, Warren & Co, Ginge Tours, Bluline Health, No1 CopperPot Credit Union and Police Mortgages.
