Going, going, gone!

Whilst my workshop might look picture perfect on the surface, several years of repairs and replacements had begun to take their toll and so it was time to face up and accept that it was time to start again.
We’ve been several weeks emptying and dismantling what turned out to be an incredibly hefty garden building to finally get to a clear site ready for a new build.
Levelling and laying block work for the new, larger building has begun and I’ll share progress as we go. In the meantime, I’m continuing to work from a small area of my kitchen/diner which is turning out to be ok. I won’t know myself when I have more space again!
Sadly, I’ve had to hold off taking any workshop bookings until July so if you have a voucher, do get in touch to save a date and I will look forward to welcoming you then.
As is often said, ‘You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs’ and the top of my garden has definitely looked better but all good things come to those who wait 🤗

Last few days to catch KINETIC

Closing on Saturday 18th April, it has been a real privilege to exhibit alongside such an inspiring and varied collection of Kinetic art.

As a volunteer steward during the exhibition, I have really got to know all the exhibits well and have thoroughly enjoyed talking about them with visitors each week. I have met some incredible people, had some wonderful conversations and learnt so much about how art, craft, engineering and creativity impact people’s lives on a practical level but also emotionally.

Thank you to all the team at MAKE Southwest for bringing this exhibition together and keeping it running (as I’m sure you can imagine having so many interactive exhibits has provided a few technical challenges!) 🙌👏

If you haven’t been yet, it is still open everyday now from 10am until 5pm at the Riverside Mill, Bovey Tracey TQ13 9AF

Ruby Anniversary - 40 Happy Years

Two heritage diamonds from family jewellery and a pretty pink ruby have been incorporated in to this recycled silver bangle celebrating 40 years of married life.

Inspired by the Treasure Bangle in my online collection, this piece has been left with a polished shine instead of the oxidised patination that I usually use. It creates a very different look and one that was perfect for an anniversary of such significance.

It’s taken me a while to share this commission, but 40 years of happy marriage can still be celebrated after the actual date so, Happy (belated) Anniversary to Sally and Mike 🥂🍾

One I wanted to keep

I love making bespoke jewellery for clients and especially enjoy bringing new life to old, broken and unworn inherited jewellery. This gold bangle was a remodelling project that I really didn’t want to say goodbye to and would have been very happy to have kept myself!

Starting out as a gold brooch, Victorian locket, diamond set ring, watch chain and odd bits of scrap in the depths of her jewellery box, Faye now has a beautifully fluid bangle set with 5 sparkling diamonds and a matching pair of diamond stud earrings to wear herself and pass on as an heirloom in the future.

9 carat and 18 carat gold with diamonds bangle. 9 carat gold diamond stud earrings

What design can I make for you?
It was a pleasure to realise Aidan’s own jewellery design for his 19th birthday gift to himself.

Made up from his own sketches, his ring and bracelet feature the mountains of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Dom.
A keen climber, I hope that one day he will get to climb all 3.

‘Climb the mountains, not so the world can see you, but so you can see the world.’

She said yes!

I’m delighted to announce that last week when Terry asked Rebekah to marry him, she did indeed say YES!

With a ring made especially for the proposal from precious 22 carat gold family wedding rings, the design may look a little familiar to those of you who have followed me for a while.

When the couple came to see me to talk through ideas for their engagement ring, they had initially considered a Celtic design mixing silver and gold but after discussing several options, Rebekah noticed my own ring which had belonged to my mum. She especially liked the simple shape and form and the appearance of the diamond being held up between the raised shoulders. Having her own beautiful diamond that she wanted to reuse for her ring, Rebekah and Terry both agreed that the design would set it off perfectly. Choosing for me to add a hammered finish to the rich coloured gold, Rebekah’s solitaire diamond ring has an added sparkle which makes it unique to her.

This ring was a delight to make. 22 carat gold is a most beautiful precious metal to work with and it was very touching to revisit the design that my mum was, and I am, so fond of.

You can read more about when I reworked my mum’s ring to incorporate my grandmother’s diamond in the Commission Stories in my website News page (link in Bio).

Congratulations to Rebekah and Terry 🥂🍾 I wish you both much love and happiness as you plan your wedding and new life together.

‘Minack Moon’ is the second necklace that I have on display in the KINETIC exhibition at .

In this version, moonlight reflections on rippling water are brought to life.

Growing up in Cornwall, we took many trips to the Minack Theatre and the evening performances were always magical. The open air theatre cut into the edge of the cliff embraced the natural backdrop of the sea and the moonlight reflections and the softly chugging fishing boats passing by were a performance all of their own.

A mirror image of its partner necklace, the moving parts have been oxidised to contrast with the sunlit version. Highlights across the dark patination create a subtle shimmer across the rolling waves.

Hanging from smooth and fluid chains which run through a tube within the body of each pendant, they are long enough to allow the wearer to manipulate the workings with a gentle stroking movement from behind. This transfers a movement to the twisted waves and ripples contained within the shallow box frame.

I am so pleased with the finished pieces. The project was not without its challenges and although the necklaces look simple in concept and design, they were the most technical piece that I have made.
Most importantly though, I have loved the chance to revisit simple memories, recognise how small things can leave lasting impact and to reconnect with my inner child and the sense of wonder that can still be found around us all whatever our age!

KINETIC - where craft meets engineering

MAKE Southwest’s large scale exhibition opens today!

In an exhibition spanning the simple and the complex, the decorative and the everyday, works are made from a wide range of materials—from precious and rare to scrap and recycled - showing that creativity can begin anywhere, with anything.

I’m exhibiting two necklaces ‘I Can See The Sea’ and ‘Minack Moon’.

This short film made by Oli Evans, a young film student, beautifully captures a little of the story behind the pieces as well as one of the necklaces in action.

The exhibition is open
Riverside Mill,
Bovey Tracey.
TQ13 9Af
10am until 5 pm until April 18th (closed Sun/Mon)

Having seen the exhibition at last nights PV, it’s really not to be missed. I had so much fun turning handles and watching the magic unfold. I do hope you will be able to visit 🤞
