🚨 CAUTION 🚨
We’ve seen the post going around Facebook recently about a lady who sold some jewellery and was left very unhappy afterwards, and we thought we’d finally say something because we’re hardly strangers to the yellow Gold Arthur van ourselves.
It’s actually been parked right outside our shop before!
Now, of all the places in Doncaster to park a mobile gold-buying van, outside a gold dealer that’s been here since 1981 is certainly a choice. 😂 We did have a little chuckle in the shop at that one.
We’ve also had plenty of customers mention the van to us and talk to us about mobile gold buyers over time, so none of this is particularly new to us. We’ve been buying and selling gold for 45 years and we know exactly how the trade works. Of course there has to be a margin. We make a margin too. We’ve got wages, rent, rates, bills and a business to run. Nobody can pay the full headline gold price and somehow keep the lights on. Making a profit isn’t the issue. For us, it’s about whether the person sitting opposite you actually understands what they have and is happy with what you’re offering.
And this is where we’re quite happy to point out a difference between us and a touring gold buyer. We’ve got bricks, a front door and the same shop you can come back to. We’re not visiting Doncaster for a few hours before heading off somewhere else. Gold Arthur’s own website describes the business as a mobile service travelling around the UK making short stops in different locations. Their website also says payment can take up to the fifth banking day after an agreement. With us, you agree the sale in our shop and you’re paid straight away.
If you want to know what your gold weighs, ask us. If you want to know the carat, ask us. If you want us to explain our offer, ask us. And if you don’t like our price? Take your jewellery home and try somewhere else. Honestly. We’re not going to chase you down Market Place because you want another quote!
We’ve been here since 1981. We’ll still be here after the yellow van has driven off.
That might sound a little cheeky, but after seeing the post being shared and hearing so many comments from customers ourselves, we think it’s a fair point to make. Wherever you sell your jewellery, know what you’ve got, understand what you’re being paid and make sure you’re comfortable before you hand it over.
