The story of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso goes all the way back to 1931…
it was created for polo players who needed a way to stop damaging their watch glass during matches.
The solution was the reversible case we still know the Reverso for today. The watch face could be turned inwards during a match, leaving the solid caseback exposed to take the knocks instead, a pretty clever solution to a very specific problem.
The one Mark’s showing here is the ladies’ Reverso in steel and 18ct gold. As Mark says, it’s not just a lovely watch, it’s a beautiful piece of jewellery too.
And that feels especially relevant at the moment. Jewellery-style watches are having a real resurgence, with smaller cases, mixed metals and watches that work as part of your jewellery rather than feeling separate from it. With its slim rectangular shape, Art Deco design and steel and gold finish, this one fits that look perfectly.
The solid reverse also became a feature in its own right. Over the years, Reversos have been personalised with engravings, enamel and decorative designs quite a change from something that originally existed because polo players kept smashing their watch glass.
