"Hope you have a good day. Let's go cheerfully! Keep smiling!" ๐ฏ๐ต
These are my tenugui. Read on...
I became aware of a Japanese concept called omotenashi a few weeks ago.ย It's one of those words for which there is no English translation. The closest I can find is this: wholehearted hospitality with no expectation of reward or return.
ย You give your full attention to someone, you anticipate what they need before they know they need it, and you ask for nothing back.
Which is exactly what humanism in action is.ย
And it's exactly what I try to do through every ceremony I write. I write one ceremony at a time, even if it takes me days to get it right.ย
ย I immerse myself in the people I'm writing about, because this helps me show up completely for someone on the hardest or the happiest day of their life.
Here's a clumsy segue - it's also why I now collect tenegui -Japanese hand towels.
Tenugui are beautiful thin printed cotton cloths, often given as gifts in the spirit of omotenashi. They're pretty, thoughtful and functional. Drying hands, hanging as decoration (they're so PRETTY! ) or worn as a headband - they've become my latest obsession alongside the philosophy they remind me of.ย
Every time I look at them I think about what it actually means to give someone your whole attention.ย No waiting for the thank you.
Just: here I am.
And that's how I approach the work I do for families and couples. It's in the unseen things. The active listening. The behind the scenes research to find just the right words, poem or reading for your ceremony. It's keeping bottled water in my car, and dog bowl, sewing kits, batteries, colouring books and crayons, and the pretty hankies I have in my work bag, and leaving you with your first picture as a married couple thanks to my trusty digital photo printer.
That's omotenashi.
So I'll be scouring Vinted for more tenegui to add to my collection. And when I've decided enough is enough, I'll pass them on, with a glad heart. Not yet though. I'm still admiring them, especially the Hokusai inspired one ๐
