Hi, It’s Vicki from back for my third and final post of today’s takeover. This post is about what motivates me and also BYE/BUY! Barbary Wood came from a place of exploring the possibility of me being a self employed creative. I studied Textiles & Surface Decoration at Gray’s School of Art, some years ago, so like a lot of creative folk I transversed disciplines to suit my personal situation. I really enjoyed it and haven’t looked back since then. I’m really inspired by sustainable design and I find it fascinating to learn about the new concepts and materials that people are discovering which are eco friendly. I’m always trying to up my game as far as producing less waste and using cruelty free products. It’s an ongoing process but it’s good to keep checking in and trying new things. It’s so satisfying to be a part of the Fife creative scene and it’s great to see so many talented makers & artists around. I only stock my work in small independent gift shops and galleries, and take private commissions through my website and social media. Of course I’m very much looking forward to the Open studios weekend - a big thank you beforehand to the organisers as our wee city is so deserving of this showcase. I hope you can come and see me, and all the other artists & makers at all the venues across Dunfermline !

Hi, it’s Vicki with my second post with , going into a bit of detail about my influences, work processes and designs. I have two main designs with my jewellery and various colour ways within them, Painterly and Abstract. I use the resin in layers to create these patterns, letting each colour dry in between layers. It can be quite time consuming but worth it, to see the resin gradually building up. I’m inspired very much by earth given colours, from the natural world but also from art and design from the mid century, especially textile artists like Lucienne Day. I love ochres and mustards, deep greens, olive and dark blues. Forms that inspire me are things like plant fossils, and geological striations - I try to visualise these when I’m working with the resin. Jesmonite is made up from two components- the gypsum powder and the water based acrylic resin. It’s an air drying resin so you have to be pretty on the ball to get the look and colour you are after! But it’s deeply satisfying to have something so rich and opaque which feels lovely to touch and wear as jewellery. I’ll be back later with my third post, so for now see you later 👋🏻

Hi it’s Vicki from Barbary Wood taking over Instagram today with I am a jewellery maker working with Jesmonite resin in my home studio in Dunfermline. I started Barbary Wood in 2012 and was primarily interested in vintage and reproduction style jewellery using old parts of watches etc and I used normal resin to create mixed media cabachons. It wasn’t until 2021 I discovered Jesmonite and changed completely due to wanting to become more eco friendly and cruelty free in the materials I was using. So I hope to be able to share with you today some of my creative thoughts and why I do what I do. I’ll be at the beautiful Pittencrieff House in the Glen for the duration of the Open Studios, alongside other artists and makers. Next post I hope to show you my inspirations behind my work, thanks for tuning in!

making more green abstract items lately, maybe because the sun is out and the green everywhere is a balm to my weary eyes! I called this shade wintergreen… but I’ve been continuing to use it all year round….it reminds me of ivy I suppose 💚

How did March come around so quickly? I’m still here…. working away ( not posting on instagram much!) making lots of items to keep stock up - and planning for the year ahead. As with the years before, I don’t sell through markets, only independent gift shops, so keeping a strong bond with them is a priority. I’m hoping to sell more of my items in Glasgow and surrounding areas ( west of Scotland) though so any advice out there will be gladly accepted. In the meantime, a big hello to Springtime, isn’t it so very welcome!
