Songbead

Songbead Handmade narrative art jewellery, designed and created in the heart of Scotland.

I am a jewellery designer/maker living on the coast of beautiful Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. I work with found objects, artisan-made mixed-media components, gemstones, glass, fibres and metal. I have been working as an artist for the past eight years, exhibiting on a national basis. My style is eclectic, colourful and quirky; I create mainly one-of-a-kind items and pay great attention to d

etail in each individual piece that I create. I aim to create unique, contemporary jewellery that has a sense of narrative, and connects the wearer to the surrounding world – be that nature itself or the urban landscape. My work also has a whimsical side; I am influenced by folklore and story-telling and I like to bring unexpected objects together in one piece of jewellery – a seemingly ancient ceramic escutcheon with delicate gemstones and a piece of hand-dyed silk, or a hand-forged copper poppy with a handmade raku-fired Finnish cottage. I work with sterling, bronze, copper and brass - this variety of metals allow me to bring a warm and rustic foundation to the jewellery that I create, and certain metal-working techniques allow me to draw different shades and hues from all four metals. I utilise ancient techniques such as knotting, wire-wrapping, alongside metal-working and forging. I am inspired by colour, light, folklore and the flora and fauna of both the UK, and beyond. Although I hope you like what you see in my online stores and at craft fairs, I frequently work to commission, and enjoy collaborating with clients to design them their perfect piece of wearable art. Please contact me at [email protected] (or simply PM me here) to discuss custom work which truly tells your story.

Another of my new secret keeper necklaces, available in my Etsy shop. I have mainly used gemstones when creating these necklaces, but this pendant was one I chose some of my favourite Czech glass for - tiny glass druks, or rounds, in a vibrant chartreuse green, sprinkled with what looks like gold dust! So pretty and it seemed the perfect colour to go with this shape of pendant - reminiscent of a leaf. I also found the most beautiful ribbon to pair with the beads - hand dyed silk from my collection! I used to collect these back when I lived in Manchester so we are talking at least 15 years ago! Delicate yet statement, tactile and unusual - I love the bold yet organic story this piece tells!

Some new stitch markers sets listed in the shop this evening! All able to be turned into a necklace if you want that option - if there’s not a drop down option for it then just message me and I’ll sort it out for you. Which set catches your eye?

I’ve been full of the cold today but actually managed to get a few photos edited and in the shop despite that. Not as fun as what I should have been doing, a Cabaret dance workshop with .with.bex but there you go! I was well enough to edit photos but not dance my heart out - I’ll just have to wait for the next workshop. However, my loss is your gain! I also had some rather exciting news about an event I’ll be appearing at later in the year - all shall be revealed as time goes on…..

Check out all of these new sets, available in my Etsy shop now.

One of my brand new secret keeper necklaces! Perfect for the knitters amongst you, but also for those who like to be able to change things up. Each of the lower components is removable and so you can choose to wear all, some or none of them - or treat yourself to another set of charms/markers and create your own brand new piece!

This necklace is part of a series which I recently launched at the Woolly Good Gathering in Edinburgh - each necklace is unique, with each copper pendant being handmade from scratch through a number of stages. I begin with bare copper wire, which I shape, hammer, file; sometimes using my hands, sometimes tools, sometimes using a torch. I then tumble them for several hours, making them sturdy and shiny, before oxidising them and then tumbling again to bring out the wonderful warm glow that the oxidised copper holds.

The next step is to embellish them with beads using fine copper wire. I choose whichever gemstones - in this case a beautiful glowing carnelian - feel right for each pendant, and painstakingly wire each one on, wrapping them carefully onto the pendant frame.

I then add some of my own handmade stitch markers, choosing stones and glass beads that perfectly complement the now finished pendant, and make sure I like the way they hang within their frame. Two necklaces in one - beautiful with or without the bead charms or markers!

In this necklace, the stitch markers are a mixture - carnelian to match the pendant, with two orange pressed glass flowers from the Czech Republic.

Phew! What a festival was - thank you so much to everyone who purchased or said hi at my pop up and took part in my class! I will share more but for now, suffice to say it was just The Best and I adored being part of it.

I’ve had a slow morning today but have taken the opportunity of the kids being down south with their grandparents to take a few photos and get them listed in my sorely neglected Etsy shop. More to come but you can find a few sets and necklaces available this evening!

Meet your new best friend - the Knitter’s Wee Pal - or Crocheter’s, just let me know and I will swap the stitch markers for more bulb pins! I’ve curated one batch of these to see how they go down and I’ll be debuting them at next month - they’re something I find super helpful, so I hope you will too!

One thing I forgot to say in the video is that they will also have mini crochet hooks for catching pesky dropped stitches, provisional cast ons etc , but they are still on their way to me. Is there anything else you’d like to see in your Knitter’s Wee Pal?

Another of my new necklaces for knitters coming to in April! This is one of my favourite shapes - I actually started making versions of this over a decade ago, and I have loved returning to it with the added element of turning it into a maker’s necklace with pretty, removable stitch markers.

And you don’t have to be a knitter to wear them! My aim with this range is to create pieces that are beautiful enough to wear, regardless of whether you knit or crochet - with the addition of the detachable elements of your making practice enhancing your experience of wearing them if you are a fibre artist.

And along with my pop up stand, I am also lucky enough to be teaching my Stitch Marker class at this year’s - this time with the added bonus of being able to turn your stitch markers into beautiful jewellery! Which style do you prefer? Simple and classic on a delicate silver chain, or a bolder antiqued spiral pendant?
