As an artist I often find myself being jealous of other artist’s work - and this isn’t a negative thing - it comes from thinking the work is beautiful and instead of being able to simply ‘appreciate’ it I find myself thinking oh could I make that?

I think this is something that’s programmed into us as artists and creatives.

I also find myself pondering - what’s next? I’ve made sooooooo many fabulous pieces of jewellery over the years - but what should I do next?

And why do we always think we have go be producing ‘new’ work - why can’t we simply be?

Silver has never been ‘less than’ it’s been ‘alternative’ - what’s changing is HOW we VALUE it!

With metal prices rising across the board, silver is becoming the NEW material of choice - even more so if it’s designed and handmade by a local crafts(wo)man.

My mission statement for the past 20-something years as a jewellery maker has been that I strive to create ‘everyday luxury for BOLD women’ - pieces that are loved, treasured and admired!

So get your silver pieces out, give them a clean and WEAR THEM!

I made this neckpiece as part of my Degree Show exhibition when I was at Glasgow School of Art way back in 1996.

It’s part of a series of pieces that were perfumed containers - so each piece was a ‘container form’ to allow you to put perfume ‘into’ them with a pattern of holes to allow the smell of the perfume out.

This piece reminds me of a handbag (also containers!) and the little box section lifts out if the sculptural forged neck torque.

I sold this piece at my degree show and lost contact with the owner - and I wonder where it is now?

I must find my sketchbook that goes with this piece and see what other ideas I had for it!

Commemorating the 80th year of VE Day today with a few photos of the ah-mazing servicemen and women who I had the pleasure of making a Silver Poppy Of Remembrance for.

Dating back to 2014 when I was asked to make 3 WW2 Veterans a silver poppy to be gifted by the Mayor of Bangor council in N.Ireland - I’ve now made a total of 40 poppies for 40 WW2 veterans gifted by 3 different mayors and for 2 different councils.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s hard to believe that this amazing project spanned 8 years!

Each poppy was hand-grown in small batches - thats a lot of hammering, I can tell you! 3 to start then 10 which turned into 25 followed by 2 which turned into another 10!

Thank you for your service.

This pair of rings were made as part of one my ‘Professors Projects’ during my Ma at Royal College of Art to reflect 2 sides of my personality!

What do you think I was trying to say?😉

The design process - much of my creative practice starts as photographs. Imagery of the world that inspire me.

I’ve always said that perhaps I have square eyes as I see the world in square frames - blink, snap and I’ve captured the image. 🟨🟨👀

The 2 photographs at the start of this carousel are amongst my earliest - taken whilst doing my Foundation Art year in Belfast in 1992 on a traditional Pentax K1000. I loved this camera.

How times have changed - now my imagery is all taken on my phone.

Can you see the references from my photos in the pieces of jewellery they later became?

The first ‘sculptural’ ring that I made 32 years ago! 😱😱😱 Where has the time gone?

One of the first projects that we had to create at Glasgow School of Art when I was doing my Ba(Hons) was to design and make a ‘Poison Ring’.

The source influences for my design came from these 2 photographs I took of grave finials from a really old graveyard in Bangor (N.Ireland).

You could say that this was the start of a long love affair for forms inspired by wrought iron railings mixed with architectural influences.

Can you see the inspiration?

In my final design I made a ‘Spinner Bead’ which can be removed by unscrewing the Aquamarine bullet stone - so you can put your poison in it - then popped back on and ‘spin’.

I have worn this ring multiple times - but never had the need to poison anyone! 😂☠️😉

I don’t often do ‘photo shoots’ with my work - mainly because most of my pieces are one-offs and made to commission - but this was a fun day creating imagery for some ‘alternative’ wedding fairs I used to do.

Featuring my Glasgow School Of Art pieces from 1995-1996 that I’ve shared in my previous posts - but the imagery taken in around 2015-2016. Making ‘old’ pieces (or should that be ‘classic’ pieces) relevant again! 😉

PS sorry have forgotten the name of the photographers but they’re from Belfast and do alternative weddings!

Sculptural pieces! It’s lovely when you have a client who wants something big and bold.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like Etta who wanted a ‘large & flamboyant’ lapel brooch to wear during TV presentations she had to do for part of her job as the former Chief Medical Officer!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This brooch was based on my ‘Swirl’ brooch that Etta always loved from my degree show work - and so I remade the original brooch and adapted the ‘swirls’ to sit on the lapel of a suit jacket.

Both these brooches are inspired by my love of railing finials and the curls of wrought ironwork mixed with plant forms and tendrils.

Both are entirely made by hand in silver with a little flash of yellow gold!

32 years on and my design ‘process’ STILL goes through a series of steps from initial idea concept through to source drawings to design sketches BEFORE any of my jewellery hits the workshop.
