Wedding Diaries Part 2: The Quaich

Following on from my last post about making our wedding rings, this is a little insight into the Quaich I crafted for our wedding ceremony.

Typically a small, shallow, two handled bowl, the act of drinking from the Quaich is a Scottish tradition that dates back centuries. The word comes from the Scottish Gaelic ‘cuach’, meaning ‘cup’, it’s also commonly referred to as the ‘the loving cup’. Once used by allying highland clans, it is now a tradition often used in wedding ceremonies in Scotland as symbol of unity.

The tradition goes that each party offers a liquid to be poured into the vessel (traditionally wh**ky) to create a blend. Each party then drinks from the bowl one after the other, proving their trust and commitment to the other.

Quaichs come in a variety of sizes and materials, but being a silversmith, I knew I could make us something really special for our ceremony. I hand raised and forged the body of the cup from 925 sterling silver, and then prepared textured, scored and folded forms that were soldered on to the main bowl to create the two iconic handles.

Our Quaich is now an heirloom piece that will remind us of our special day forever 🤍

One month ago today! 🤍

Finally getting round to posting on here to share my news, as well as some more images of our amazing day! It was a Aillie Anderson Silver wedding all-round and I’m so happy to finally share everything I’ve been busy working on over the last few months, as well as possibly some honeymoon bits from our time in Japan!

I knew I wanted to make it a memorable day for everyone involved, so as well as making our own wedding bands, I also made all our bridal party jewellery for the day, custom earrings for the mother of the bride, a bespoke engraved signet ring for the groom, and a contemporary sterling silver Quaich that we used during our ceremony. 🤍

I’d like to give a special mention to another jeweller who was also part of our day, . Ive admired Alma’s work for a very long time and was lucky to receive a pair of her Cluster Drop Earrings from my husband-to-be to wear on the day, to go with my beautiful engagement ring that she also made for us in 2023.
