Happy New Year everyone! Back to work today ✨
There’s something quite grounding about easing back into work after the festive break - taking stock, tidying up, and gently finding your rhythm again. That calm for me was broken at 4pm on 2nd January, when an unexpected international call came through.
It was crackly, confusing, and at first didn’t even sound like it was meant for me - until I made out the words “ring stuck on finger… do you have a cutter?”
Not my usual business call, but I was happy to help - albeit slightly panicked that I should maybe have just directed them straight to A&E.
“We’re staying in a hotel nearby,” he said. “I’ll send her over in a taxi.”
I assumed the Gleddoch just up the hill… but no - Cameron House. Not quite so nearby.
An hour later, a distressed woman arrived at my door. Tara, had enthusiastically put her rings back on after having a baby seven months ago, and they were now very well and truly stuck.
The taxi meter was running, there was no time to spare, and all I could do was gently take hold of her finger - adorned with a 6 carat marquise diamond solitaire in platinum (the biggest I’ve ever seen in person) - and make the cut.
With a sickening crunch, the metal split. A pair of pliers, a careful pull, and her finger was finally free.
“Thank you,” she gasped - and then immediately began wrestling her diamond encrusted wedding band off the same swollen finger. That one came off too, thankfully without further drama or cutting.
And just like that, she was gone. I dread to think what that taxi fare was, but it was still way better than spending hours in A&E - or worse, flying home to the US with the rings still on and risking real damage.
I also dread to think about the repair job on that beautiful ring, but that part was out of my hands.
My husband, ever the businessman, said I should have charged for the job. But it didn’t feel right to make money from someone’s panic - even if I was technically closed and she clearly could have afforded it.
Sometimes this job isn’t about sparkle or sales. It’s about trust, care, and being there when someone really needs help.
Here’s to a year of unexpected moments, kindness when it counts, and more surprises along the way ✨
