This sentimental transformation marked the end of a cancer treatment and the return from isolation back to life.

During my visits, my client shared many experiences that were connected to her preloved jewels and that had shaped her life.

In a similar way, we transformed her jewels to reflect her self today.

This solid bar necklace set with a sapphire and diamonds, two chunky companion rings set with sentimental stones and diamonds and a cute pair of triple diamond studs were born.

Come and join me at the bench!

Repairs are also part of a Goldsmith’s job. I usually hold my breath in moments like this, as a second too long could melt the piece.

Fortunately, it went swimmingly first time and the process made me proud of the skills I have developed over the years.

It could only happen because many experienced and wise smiths have shared their time and knowledge with me and continue to do so.

Here, I was talking through my steps during soldering and she gave me the gift of great videos and pictures. 🙏

What are the most remarkable coincidences in your life?

One of mine was this commission: To turn a much loved solid gold bracelet gifted by a husband to his wife decades ago into life affirming starburst pendants for eight grand daughters.

When we met to discuss the project, we discovered that our maternal roots were only 50m from each other in Eastern Europe, that there were similar challenges of forging a new life after loss and displacement.

We found many common traditions, habits and sayings. We even found that we owned the same collection of Hutschenreuther porcelain and that the starburst was a recurring theme over decades of heirlooms.

Creating new pieces from sentimental materials is a very personal and involved process. After all, we are engaging deeply in a transformation from what was to what will be, something I do in awe and reverence for your story and the materials. It gives me an immense sense of purpose in my work as a goldsmith.

Remodels: They reimagine your preloved jewellery.

They are bespoke projects, that can recycle stones and precious metals in the most meaningful and sustainable way.

Here is an idea of the process:

I assess the pieces carefully and discuss all the options with you depending on the materials and the condition of your heirlooms.

During the design process, you can have as much or as little input as you like. I will share sketches with you before a final decision.

Before new creation can begin, there is much preparation involved in remodelling:

I unset and clean any stones, assess metal where needed, clean it and saw out any solder seams by hand before melting down any high carat metal. I employ traditional goldsmithing methods: Forging with a hammer, passing the metal again and again through my rolling mill and drawing it through a plate, I create the sheet and wire needed. Whenever the metal hardens, it is annealed with a soft flame and pickled, washed and dried before the next round of shaping. Only then can we start to build your new design.

I might check in with you throughout the process and share some pictures.

When your jewel is built, it will be sanded, cleaned and polished depending on the design. We set any stones and the jewel goes to the Assay office for hallmarking.

While such a project is not a budget option, even if you can save on metal and stone costs, there are usually a range of options we can discuss.

When I handed this remodelled former wedding ring to S, there was a long silence.

Then a deep breath in and a slow breath out. This ring finally marked the end of a chapter and new beginnings, she said.

Reusing the metal meant acknowledging and incorporating the past as it undoubtedly shapes us into who we are now, and adding the two salt and pepper diamonds representing her children born since and almost grown up.

A work that could not have been more in line with my values: To create jewels that become with you, to behold for reflection and to be bequeathed one day to the next generation.

It’s an enjoyably busy summer with commissions and collabs here in the studio and some serene paddle boarding on the river.

Over the coming weeks, I will give you some insights into my daily goldsmith’s processes and some of the jewels we reimagined from your heirlooms.

The hire car / spaceship has been returned, boxes are unpacked and the dust has begun to settle on a truly fantastic weekend at | Oxford. ✨

A huge thank you goes to Piyush, Alis, Nicole and the whole team including security and stewards who ran such a seamless event, to my inspiring fellow makers who make the craft community feel like home, and most importantly, to everyone who visited Stand A8.

Whether you stopped by to try on the new huggies, shared a moving story for a sentimental remodel, or took home a new piece of jewellery—thank you. Your support, inspiring conversations, and shared love for independent craft mean a lot to me.
