Is in-person permanent jewellery training better than online training? 👀⚡

The answer really depends on YOU.

We all learn differently, and what works brilliantly for one person might not be the best option for someone else.

For this student, attending our in-person permanent jewellery training was absolutely the right
choice.
She loved being able to practise with us there, ask questions as they came up and receive immediate feedback on her technique.

And that’s one of the biggest benefits of learning in person. You get hands-on experience with a
tutor beside you, helping you make those little adjustments that can make such a difference to
your welding. ⚡

But that doesn’t mean online training is a lesser option.

Is your tungsten sticking out too far? 👀⚡ You could be losing the benefits of using argon without even realising it!

Your permanent jewellery machine might still be producing a weld, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your argon is doing its job.

When you weld with argon, the gas creates a protective shield around the jump ring, helping to prevent oxygen from interfering with the weld. 💨

But here’s something many artists overlook.
The length of your tungsten matters!

When your tungsten is positioned correctly, the argon can surround the area where the two ends of your jump ring meet.

But if your tungsten extends too far from the stylus, something interesting happens.

⚡ Your machine can still create a spark.

⚡ Your jump ring might still weld together.

💨 But the argon may not be reaching the weld area effectively enough to provide the protection
you need.

So how can you tell if your tungsten is positioned correctly?

Notice how the argon surrounds the join in the first example, but falls short when the tungsten is
extended too far.

It’s such a small detail, but it can make a big difference to your welding results.

The tiny detail that could be ruining your welds… 👀⚡️

There are several reasons you might be blowing your jump rings, from your power settings and positioning to your angle and timing.

But one of the BIGGEST culprits?

👉 Your jump ring isn’t properly closed.

If the two ends of your jump ring aren’t touching before you weld, your chances of getting a clean, successful weld become much slimmer.

And we know what you’re thinking… surely closing a jump ring is the easy bit? 😂

You’d be surprised!

It’s actually one of the skills we see students struggle with the most when they first start. But once you learn the correct technique, it becomes second nature and can make a HUGE difference to the consistency of your welds.

That’s why our Permanent Jewellery Training doesn’t just teach you to press a button and create a spark. ⚡️ We break down all those tiny techniques that make permanent jewellery easier, from opening and closing your jump rings correctly to positioning, welding and troubleshooting when things don’t quite go to plan.

Keep blowing your jump rings? ⚡

When a permanent jewellery weld fails, it’s tempting to assume you need more power.

But sometimes, the exact opposite is true.

The amount of power you use needs to match the amount of metal you’re trying to weld. And when you’re working with a tiny jump ring, particularly a finer gauge, too much power can cause

the metal to blow apart rather than creating the clean, strong weld you were aiming for. 👀

So, if you keep blowing your jump rings, don’t automatically turn your machine up.

⚡ Try turning it down.

Reduce the power and test again.

You might find that a small adjustment is all it takes to stop that jump ring blowing open and start getting a much more consistent weld.

This is also why we don’t believe in giving permanent jewellery artists one set of machine settings and telling them that’s all they’ll ever need.

The size of the jump ring changes.

The gauge of the metal changes.

And the amount of metal you’re asking your machine to weld changes.

So your power needs to match what’s actually in front of you.

Understanding why your weld is failing means you can make the right adjustment instead of repeatedly changing things and hoping something works.

And that’s exactly what we teach.
