I believe that this charming antique pill box is German in origin. It is stamped for 900 quality silver and bears what are possibly French import marks. I am dating it to circa 1900- 1920.
The lavish, raised engraving is in the repoussé style and covers the front, back and sides. There are beautiful flowers, buds and swirling leaves.
The name repoussé comes from the French pousser, 'to push forward'. This technique, became popular in Europe during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
The box opens easily on its hinge via a tab at the front. The interior is richly gilded. On the top rim is ‘900’ for the quality of silver, maker’s marks and what appear to be two worn weevil marks which indicates importation into France.
