Ola Gorie Jewellery Ola Gorie Scottish and Celtic jewellery is made in Orkney by a dedicated team of craftspeople. We haven't been here quite as long as that - 'only' since 1859!

We offer the finest examples from the Ola Gorie range from traditional classics to inspirational contemporary designs. Ola Gorie is based in the medieval heart of Kirkwall, the Orkney Islands' capital (pop. 9,000.) The sea is a few hundred yards away and its sound and salty tang are with us every day, even in the centre of this bustling market town. Our family business is located on the town's main street, in the shadow of the magnificent sandstone St Magnus Cathedral, built from 1137 by Orkney's Norse rulers. For much of that time the family operated as a grocers and w**e merchant (which latter trade we still carry on to this day) but since 1960 there has also been superlative jewellery.

Ola Gorie founded the jewellery company that bears her name in 1960. From the start, she decided that there could be no compromise on the quality of the jewellery she was making.

As her business grew over the years, she instilled in all who worked with her an unwavering commitment to the highest standards. It’s a matter of pride for us still.

All our jewellery is made using the Lost Wax Casting method, and each piece individually finished by hand. This is a method developed thousands of years ago – and used by ancient Celts across Europe, including Picts in Orkney – that still produces wonderful results today.

Happy Valley is one of Orkney’s best kept secrets, and a joy to visit at this time of year.

As Orkney’s smallest nature reserve, the garden is home to an amazing array of wildflowers, mosses, ferns, birds, butterflies and moths – and 700 trees.

Amazingly, this was all created by one man, Edwin Harrold, who moved into the small cottage of Bankburn in 1948, when it sat on a bare patch of heathland.

He started digging and planting, and he never stopped. He created paths through the trees as they grew, shaped the course of the burn as it flowed, watched as wildlife settled in this peaceful habitat.

Today is World Photo Day. While we’re surrounded by a feed of images on social media, sometimes the best photos are the ones you don’t share, that have meaning for you.

Photos can capture fleeting moments or help create lasting memories. They can also be a way of pausing and observing the little details in nature and the world around us.

This picture was taken in Rackwick, in the island of Hoy. It’s a much-photographed location with its dramatic cliffs and wide, rocky bay. Orkney is a constant source of inspiration, and it’s impossible to tire of the varied, beautiful landscape.

Our islands have been home to one of the most beloved seabirds over the summer: puffins, or Tammies Norries as they’re known in Orcadian.

They start arriving for their summer holiday in Orkney around April, with May to July being the best window to spot them.

Now that August is here, their annual visit is nearing an end as they prepare for their journey south.

While we wait for their charming multi-coloured beaks to reappear next spring, we have our puffin collection to keep you company.
