Ola Gorie Jewellery

Ola Gorie Jewellery Ola Gorie Scottish and Celtic jewellery is made in Orkney by a dedicated team of craftspeople. We haven't been here quite as long as that - 'only' since 1859!

We offer the finest examples from the Ola Gorie range from traditional classics to inspirational contemporary designs. Ola Gorie is based in the medieval heart of Kirkwall, the Orkney Islands' capital (pop. 9,000.) The sea is a few hundred yards away and its sound and salty tang are with us every day, even in the centre of this bustling market town. Our family business is located on the town's mai

n street, in the shadow of the magnificent sandstone St Magnus Cathedral, built from 1137 by Orkney's Norse rulers. For much of that time the family operated as a grocers and wine merchant (which latter trade we still carry on to this day) but since 1960 there has also been superlative jewellery.

Now that we’re well into spring, we thought we’d share one of our favourite seasonal treats: Ola’s famous rhubarb crumble recipe.

Rhubarb is starting to appear in so many of our gardens across Orkney, so it’s the perfect time to enjoy something homegrown, and homemade.

Read the blog for the recipe and to discover Ola’s two special twists on this classic comforting dish:

An Ola Gorie fan recently asked on this page about Ola's teacher and friend, David Hodge. David taught Ola at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen in the 1950s, resulting in her becoming the first jewellery design graduate of that august institution. After retirement, David and his lovely wife Tina moved to Burray in Orkney, and remained firm friends with Ola and her family as long as he lived - which was a wonderfully long time.

David passed on his knowledge, skills, and passion for good jewellery to others too, not least Karen Duncan, who has been the key craftsperson behind Ola Gorie for many years, as well as making her own distinctive designs.

Here's a photo of David from about 2005, wearing a Moberg hat, designed and crocheted by famed photographer Gunnie Moberg, and sold around the world by Ola's daughter Ingrid, and her knitwear company, Tait & Style. (Gunnie took the photo too.)

What a coming together of creative people!

Our collection of the month for April features our Birdland and Machair designs.

Birdland is inspired by the birds that call Orkney home, or even just pass through. They fill our skies and make the long days of spring and summer sweeter with their song.

We’ve always thought that, if Orkney needed a new name, Birdland would be very appropriate.

We head to the West coast of Scotland for the inspiation behind Machair, that beautiful maritime meadow fringing the coast with grasses, wildflowers and seabirds.

These designs celebrate the new life of spring, and look forward to long summer days spent on pristine white beaches with offshore breezes rippling across the landscape.

Together, the Birdland and Machair designs evoke skies and shores across Scotland, celebrating the diversity of this landscape we’re so lucky to live in, each piece capturing the unique beauty of this special place.

From 1960 to 2026...

Ola Gorie broke new ground in the 1960s as the first jewellery maker in Orkney since Viking times, creating designs inspired by our islands' history and culture.

Her revolutionary designs influenced an entire generation of jewellers and have been appreciated and admired around the world ever since.

Today, our jewellery continues to be hand-crafted in Orkney. Every piece we sell, whether online or in our Longship store in the heart of Kirkwall, is made with the special care and attention Ola's designs - and our customers - deserve.

In the hands of Ola's daughter, Ingrid, Ola's legacy is still going strong: we continue to make her iconic designs with the same quality craftsmanship that has been our trademark from the start.

Read more of our story, and let it inspire you to celebrate the special moments and milestones in your life with Ola Gorie.
