I'm having some phone issues at the moment, so if you need to get hold of me, you can contact me via WhatsApp or Messenger.

I'm using an old phone as mine wouldn't switch on this morning. My fault. I dropped it before I went on holiday and knackered the on/off and volume switches as well as the screen. It was doing OK as long as I didn't let the battery run down until I could get it yo the repair shop. I've been so busy I never had the chance and then last night, I forgot to plug it into the charger! Doh..

I feel lost, as, like most people. My whole life is on there with everything set up to remember passwords so I don't have to. Then Google locked me put as it thought I was trying to hack my account.

Getting there, slowly, but you don't realise how much you use it for, until you can't!

It's been quiet here with holidays, final exams and gigs, more holidays and birthdays.
Today is my daughter's 18th and of course it involved a garnet, her favourite gemstone.
A chunky torque bangle with a bezel set garnet cabochon and some silver ball details, with a bright finish and patinated around the setting to give an antique look.
It was good to be back at the bench.

I'm in a lull between holidays at the minute and, ngl, struggling to get motivated. Not helped by a trip to A&E this weekend.
Last week I was in Scotland, catching up with family who I last saw in October, my oldest friend and an old flatmate and good friend that I haven't seen since my wedding 20 years ago as she moved to Canada!
She's also an Aquarian, so I made her a wee amethyst pendant with a trim in gold-filled wire. I don't have any decent photos as I was too busy chatting!
Back in Leeds, my 4 legged children have had their "almost summer" haircuts. They were long overdue given how warm it has been!
Next week, we're off to the Yorkshire Dales. I'm hoping to do lots of designing and sketches from our cottage. Just look at this view! Amazing, isnt it? If that doesn't inspire me, nothing will!
Then it'll be back and full steam ahead for a maker's market at the end of June! Watch this space.

It's been a bit quiet over here at Little Bird towers for a few weeks.
For those of you who don't know, I have stage 4 cancer and was very unwell last year. Thankfully, the modern miracle of targetted chemotherapy is keeping my cancer at bay (in fact it's beating it back, slowly as I'm on a reduced).
I've been throwing myself into my jewellery since January, making and doing an online business diploma, but I have hit a bit of a mental wall recently and haven't made anything in over two weeks.
A combination of the anniversary of my diagnosis (when I was told to start saying my goodbyes as they hadnt isolated the genetic driver at that point) and chaotic, busy, stessful end of years for my son who's sitting his first written GCSE today and my daughter who is in the middle of final submissions for college and auditions in the arts sector for uni in September.
Anyway, here's a wee peek at things I've been working on recently. There will be more to come soon as I have a makers market booked in at the end of June (more on that later). The next few weeks will be mostly holiday (visiting family and old friends and celebrating our 20th anniversary).
If you've talked to me recently about a commission, I'll be in touch later today.

Something new today.
Some shaped pottery cabochons and tile offcuts from one of my cabochon suppliers.
Quite excited to have a play and see where these go. I'm thinking pendants or bangles as they're a bit chunky for a ring.
If you fancy something a little bit different, give us a shout...

Another commission piece.
Linda, an old online friend, commissioned a ring for me back during the crazy days of lockdown.
About 18 months later her husband commissioned a matching pendant for her big birthday.
FFWD almost 4 years and Linda asked if I'd make a companion piece for her daughter's 18th.
Linda wanted granulation balls like her ring, but something unique to represent her daughter.
April birthstone is diamond, but diamonds are a bit extravagant for silver, so after looking at a few options, we went with moissanite.
This is a lab grown stone and tbh, I like it better than diamonds.
The light sparkles from it in all colours of the spectrum, whereas diamonds only refracts white light and as such can be quite cold especially when set in white metal. It's set in a gold filled tube setting with three silver granulation on a 5mm hammered silver band.

This ring has been on quite a journey thanks to a mistyped address. Linda lives in a big Scottish city. It's the home of the tenement flat, so there were 8 flats at that address that it could have been delivered to. It was finally tracked down at the flat of a young man who opened the door in a fog of fragrant smoke. He seemed initially confused, then fleetingly quite worried, at 2 proper adults on his doorstep at 9pm asking if he'd had any strange packages delivered. 😂
Explanations over and the parcel was retrieved from within. I'm hoping it would have made it's way back here eventually, but you never know!

Linda's daughter is made up with her ring, and the drama over its whereabouts, that she was totally oblivious to, as it unfolded, have added to her 'story'!!

This is why I love what I do. The stories behind the pieces, both before and after they leave my workshop!!

And a lesson has been learnt to check and double check addresses before going to the post office.

Happy 18th "Mudge."
I hope your ring goes on many more adventures, but with you this time!

So this happened...
I'm now registered at Edinburgh Assay Office so I can have my jewellery hallmarked!
Why hallmark?
1. It's a legal requirement under The Hallmarking Act 1973 for all gold and mixed gold/other metal items over weighing over 1g and silver items over 7.78g. Platinum is 0.5g but I've no plans to work in platinum just yet as the soldering process is very different.
2. It's the ultimate quality mark as every item is tested to ensure it meets the purity standard and will be marked accordingly.
3. It gives customers peace of mind that if it says silver, it is silver, or if it says 18k gold, it is 18k and not 14k or 10k.
4. It's pretty cool to have my initials on the things I make!

I went with Edinburgh as a nod to my Scottish roots and because it came highly recommended by my fellow jewellers and metalsmiths.

So, I can now sell heavier items, gold and mixed metal.
I've opted for my initials, JIJ as my sponsor's, or makers mark, just to put it out there that I made this!

Info from The Edinburgh office here https://www.edinburghassayoffice.co.uk/for-consumers/ for information.

Many people don't realise that a 925 stamp on its own isn't a hallmark, and nor is it a guarantee, as anyone who's ever bought cheap jewellery online that turned green will tell you.

Well, I'm excited about it, anyway and looking forward to getting my first hallmarked pieces back!
Any questions, just shout in the comments and I'll try and answer them.
Now I just need to figure out how to display my dealer's notice on here...

I've been desperate to share this one, and now it's finally on the recipients finger I can.
This stone is Chrome Aventurine and it's just gorgeous. It's set in fine silver on a wide Sterling silver band and has some granulation balls for detail/interest. The band has a hammered finish. Aventurine is a type of quartz, mostly found in India, and it can be translucent or opaque, like this example that has a lot of chrome fuchsite inclusions. The chrome gives it a lovely glittery shimmer.
I loved making this; from initial ideas to final ring and every step in between. I even got to practice my rendering skills into the bargain (and boy do I need the practice!). The final design was a hasty afterthought, but Adam, who commissioned the ring for his wife Christa knew that was the one. Christa and I go back a good few years now, "meeting" on the mumsnet cloth nappies forum when my nearly 18 year old was a baby. I do think there's something special about making jewellery for friends.
I have other unusual stones on standby (collecting them has become something of an obsession). If you want something unique and eye-catching to grace your finger (or wrist, neck or ears) get in touch.

As a largely self-taught silversmith, its good to get some training in from people more qualified than me. I did the Jewellers Academy Silver Diploma in 22/23 and have enrolled in their Fine Silver course for 25/26.
In the meantime, I came across Alan Revere on facebook. Alan is one of the most influential Master Goldsmiths in the US. He honed his trade in Germany and took many European methods back to the US, and set up the prestigious Academy of Jewellery Arts in San Fancisco. It became one of the foremost training programmes in the US until Alan retired in 2017.
Retirement bored him though, so he set up his Facebook group. In conjunction with his book, Professional Jewellery Making, Alan guides you through the projects in his book which cover all the basic techniques and gives you a real understanding of all aspects of precious metalworking including forging and forming. When you complete all projects in the book, you get a signed certificate from Alan, so that's my goal. A nice certificate to hang in my workshop.
I've jumped in at project 6, and will catch up on the others as I go along, but here's my classic, timeless, toggle bracelet with a brass-brushed satin finish. It's the same technique and material used by Tiffany, Hermès et all, but will have a much less hefty price tag as a made to order, item in my shop!! If I get my finger out and register my makers (or sponsors) mark that is.
I love chain making, even though it's ridiculously time consuming. I've learnt a few new techniques making this, so hopefully it will have streamlined and improved my processes going forwards.

Flower stud earrings with 2mm aquamarines, the March birthstone. I had such fun making these, but it's always a lovely thing to make things for family and good friends.
I'll be making more of these for sure, and have lots of tiny birthstone gemstones and cubic zirconia if you'd like some made for an upcoming birthday.
Anyway, Happy Birthday for tomorrow Laura Williamson. Enjoy.
