This is a Gerald Genta-designed Universal Genève Polerouter — the very piece that kicked off the career of the man who would later create the Royal Oak, Nautilus, and so many other icons.
In 1954, at just 23 years old, Genta was commissioned by Universal Genève to design a watch for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) pilots flying the first commercial routes over the North Pole. Those flights demanded something special: anti-magnetic, shock-resistant, water- and dust-proof, and precise enough to serve as a reliable backup in extreme conditions. Genta delivered the Polarouter (later renamed Polerouter), complete with its signature twisted “lyre” lugs, elegant proportions, and that distinctive two-part dial architecture with a tension ring.
Only around 170 of the earliest examples carried the SAS dial and were issued to the crews. This gold automatic example sits in that broader early lineage — the pure Genta design language released as the model transitioned from exclusive pilot issue into the wider world, before the full commercial Polerouter family exploded in the late 1950s and 1960s.
