Squat depth in Olympic lifting: How low should you go? 🤔⬇️

While you can squat as deep as mobility allows in both front and back squats, the PURPOSE and required depth differ for Olympic lifters:

FRONT SQUAT
PURPOSE
Directly mimics the receiving/catch position of the Clean.
DEPTH
Crucial to train for maximal depth (“ass to grass”) to develop strength and stability in the bottom of the clean.
BENEFIT
Enables a lower catch, allowing you to lift heavier weights and maximizing your potential in the clean.

BACK SQUAT
PURPOSE
Primarily builds raw leg drive strength and power off the floor and in the dip of the jerk.
DEPTH
While full depth is beneficial for overall strength and mobility, the absolute bottom position isn’t as sport-specific as in the front squat. Focusing on consistent depth and heavy loading is key.
BENEFIT
Increases overall strength, which carries over to both the front squat and the Olympic lifts.

Both squats have their place, but think about the why behind each squat.

LOWC we pour our heart and souls in to the LOWC community. It is amazing to observe the true power of fitness, both physical and mental and how it brings so many people together, and we wouldn’t be here without the TEAMLOWC Crew!

We personally thank you all for choosing TEAMLOWC, for showing up everyday and for believing in us this year.

A huge thank you must also go out to all of our coaches and staff for their tireless hard work, commitment and sense of fun every single day.
