Hallmarks are your guarantee, have a look out for them on your jewellery and other precious metal items! (You might need a magnifying glass though!🔍)

Hallmarks were first introduced in the UK in the 1300s, they were considered to be the first consumer protection; giving a guarantee of the metals purity. The UK has one of the strictest hallmarking laws in the world, some marks used are common place, they tell you what you need to know about the metal - like what metal it is and where it was made. But you can also find some very unique and rare marks.

In the top picture on the far right, you can see two crescent moons facing each other. This symbol was used during the second world war to show that this ring was within rationing standards set at the time.

The middle picture shows an anchor, this means that this particular item was made in Birmingham.

And then at the bottom we have a silver hallmark, a lion, it's pretty worn as this item is from 1804! The date letter however, is very visible. Each area of the UK had different style letters for different time periods, meaning you can figure out exactly what year something was made. This however is no longer mandatory so down the years we will lose the ability to know this kind of thing!
