Was Art Nouveau the most beautiful era of jewellery design?

With its flowing lines, botanical forms, symbolic details and fascination with the natural world, Art Nouveau transformed jewellery into something far more than decoration alone.

Designers embraced unconventional materials, movement, colour and unusual gemstones, creating pieces that felt almost alive. Jewellery became art, storytelling and sculpture for the body.

It is an era I return to again and again as inspiration for my own work, including the design of Nouveau Soleil, where soft curves and natural forms helped shape a ring that feels both romantic and completely individual.

Are sapphires a better choice than diamonds for an engagement ring?

Diamonds are timeless, but sapphires bring something different: colour, individuality, history and symbolism. They are also one of the strongest gemstones used in jewellery, making them a beautiful choice for a piece designed to be worn every day.

Sapphires do not only come in blue. They can be yellow, pink, green, orange, purple and almost every shade in between — each one changing the mood of a design completely.

For Nouveau Soleil, yellow sapphire was the perfect centre stone. Warm, golden and full of light, it gave the ring its sunlit feeling and became part of the story.

So, are sapphires better than diamonds?

What if your dream ring already exists — just in fragments?

A curve saved from one ring.
The setting from another.
A gemstone colour, a vintage detail, a feeling you cannot quite put into words.

Meg came to me with a collection of inspiration rather than one finished idea. My role was to understand what connected those fragments and transform them into a design that felt entirely her own.

Through sketches, CAD refinements and careful choices, those separate details became Nouveau Soleil — New Sun: an Art Nouveau-inspired yellow sapphire ring created as a one-of-a-kind future heirloom.

Sometimes your dream ring does not exist yet.
Sometimes it is simply waiting for someone to bring all the pieces together.

Meg sent me images of five rings she loved, although she liked them there was sometging missing and she knew her dream ring didn’t exist yet.

I looked beyond the individual references to find what connected them. Together we discovered ornate vintage shoulders, flowing Art Nouveau lines, warm yellow gold and a striking coloured centre stone was the way to go.

From those fragments came Nouveau Soleil: an heirloom designed for Meg, where Art Nouveau romance meets the warmth of a golden sun.

This is my final post in the deep dive into The Ambi Ring — and maybe the most important one.

After sharing the history of the Ambi/Buta pattern, the symbolism behind the design, and the story of Meg’s surprise commission for Leon, I wanted to bring it all together.

From the first ideas and design references, to the hidden musical symbolism, the flowing Ambi-inspired curves, the colour-shifting purple sapphire, and the final gold ring — this is how the piece came together from start to finish.

A glimpse of the long, beautiful process behind the Ambi Ring.

From early ideas, mood board to initial designs, then variations of the 3d design many things come together to carefully create the final piece.

This ring was so much more than a wedding band. It was commissioned by Meg as a surprise for her husband, Leon and designed to hold his story in metal.

Inspired by the Ambi/Buta motif, subtle musical symbolism, and a deep purple sapphire, the finished ring became bold, rhythmic and deeply personal.

The process is long, detailed and full of tiny decisions but when the final piece carries this much meaning, every step is worth it.

We see this pattern everywhere in summer
On dresses
On scarves
On shirts
At festivals But how often do we stop to ask where it came from? What does it symbolise? Why do we call it Paisley? Before it was sold to us as "paisley", this motif had older names, deeper mearnings and cultural roots across South Asian and Persian design traditions. Ihave loved this pattern as long as can remember, the curves, the beauty, the nature intertwined in it. But I was also guilty of just calling it Paisley and never looking deeper. When was asked to include it as a design inspiration knew this had to change, so dug deeper in order to understand the beauty, symbolism and the magic woven into it. Life is about learning and growing so created this post so maybe others can learn and grow with me. When we see the pattern now maybe we could refer to it as Ambi or Buta as a small act of honouring and celebrating the history and majesty of this beautiful pattern.

The Ambi Ring is one of the most special pieces I've ever had the pleasure of working on. Commissioned by Meg as a surprise wedding band for her husband, Leon.

Named after Ambi, a South Asian motif linked to the mango, a symbol associated with life and renewal. (From the pattern commonly known in the west as Paisley)

Inspired by Leon’s love of music, musical motif details are woven into the flowing curves of the band. At the centre sits a deep purple sapphire, held in a gold bypass design of salt and pepper diamonds. The Ambi Ring is rhythmic, bold and full of movement, like a melody captured in metal.

A love song in gold.

Ancient Greek crowns were never just decorations.
Surviving gold wreaths and diadems date back to the 4th century BCE making them over 2,300 years old!

Leaves, flowers and precious metals carried different meanings: myrtle for love and beauty, and gold for status, divinity and eternity (as well as the others on here)

Crowns were symbols of power, ceremony, devotion and remembrance — worn in life, and sometimes placed in tombs to carry their beauty into the afterlife.

The Wild Laurel Tiara is my modern interpretation of that ancient language: a bespoke crown inspired by nature, myth, symbolism and the majesty of the past. ✨
