I’ve had a few questions recently about whether we make bespoke pieces, and the answer is yes, absolutely!

(We currently have a few slots for antique GEMbellished clasps and t-bars - but only a few, so be in touch)

We are regularly working with you behind the scenes to create your very own perfect chain rings, gem-set vintage necklaces, curb bracelets… if you see it on the grid, there’s every chance we can make you a custom version. As you know, we’re all about Old Gold, so what we have in at any one moment can vary - but we like to think of that as part of the fun.

Michelle’s commission brief was full of heart - a dog clasp for a loved and lost family pet, and her children’s birthstones in earthy, grounded hues, to represent their lifestyle and passion for the outdoors.

One styling tip I’m asked all the time is how to mix metals! I love a mixed metals look, but today’s masterclass is not from me, it’s from one of our fantastic customers who has sent in some pictures of her gorgeous stack.

I love that she wears white and yellow metals together and sometimes goes for an all white metal look, pairing a silver necklace with a GEMbellished dog clasp and t-bar.

Pairing platinum with silver and antique with new, inherited heirlooms have been woven in to create something truly timeless and unique.

I definitely think that mixing metals is more of an art than a science and involves getting comfortable with your collection so you can see which metals strike your fancy each day!

Let me tell you about what is - in this gemologists humble opinion - one of the most exciting gemstones on the scene right now: the incredible Mali Garnet.

Discovered relatively recently in the 1990s, this genuinely scarce hybrid garnet is found exclusively in West Africa. It’s a unique blend of grossular and andradite (aka demantoid) garnet, which gives it a unique set of properties that have all the gem geeks fan-girling.

What truly sets it apart is its exceptional brilliance and fire. Thanks to its specific composition, the Mali Garnet boasts high dispersion meaning it scatters light beautifully, delivering a superb sparkle often compared to the highly prized demantoid garnet.

These stones come in a stunning, sunny palette: from golden yellows and golds to vibrant olive-greens. With a solid hardness of 7 to 7.5, the Mali Garnet is not just a beautiful stone, but a durable and lasting choice for jewellery, and I love to work with it.

There are two downsides to Mali garnets: firstly the crystal grows in such a way that the quality is highest at the centre of the crystal and quality clean gems are rarely over 2ct in size, and secondly they aren’t easy to come by. So imagine my excitement when my favourite dealer of these super gemstones let me pick from their latest haul! If you’d like a custom Mali garnet piece, be in touch!

Styling GEMbellished: part one. I often get asked how to style our antique T bars and dog claps, so I thought I’d show you how I wear mine. I adore the combo of this minty tourmaline and deep berry garnet and wear them together almost always.

If you have a particular chain in mind for a t-bar we can always customise the orientation of the links. As standard we orient the top link to work when clipped onto a clasp, but if you have wearing along a chain as a pendant in mind, let us know, and if it would sit better after a re-orientation of the links we can sort that out for you no problem!

I don’t usually go for round cuts but I’m so glad I did - they are the perfect match for these old gold (and deeply storied) wedding bands 💫

The utility mark was used when metals were rationed in WW2 and jewellers were only permitted to make wedding bands from 9ct, weighting less than 2dwt (3.1g). It is the broken “o” stamp within the ring!
