One of the highlights of Winter is the Red Robin Photinia. An elegant hedging option for smart city gardens, we also plant them small into seasonal displays that we rotate into general planting schemes later on. You can also find compact & dwarf varieties that are ideal for this.

With the Christmas season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to bring a touch of colour to your garden – and our β€˜Red Robin’ Photinia is ideal for that! ❀️
Its vibrant red and green foliage adds a naturally festive feel now, while remaining beautifully versatile and eye-catching all year round.
Available in a wide size range from 60 to 300 cm to suit any garden and any style.

Update.. planting window boxes in Clapham

Making planting choices suitable for November/December that will last through Christmas and beyond, it was important to complement the planting in the front garden of our customer's smart south-facing victorian terraced property.

We were after a cool, architectural, and sophisticated look that blended in with the textures and pale tones of the main garden (think Calamagrostis, Ballota, and Artemisia silvers). We focussed on structure and density over fleeting flowers. Eventually settled on a cool, toned, elegant palette with lots of deep green, crisp white, and silver.

Final picks use texture (sedge vs. broadleaf) and a refined, limited palette (deep green and crisp white/cream) to provide a sophisticated winter display that echoes the white and silver hues already present in the customer's summer and perennial planting, contrasts with the architectural forms of their dormant grasses and provides a seasonal break from the blues and purples of summer borders. The window box look is intentional, contemporary, and aligned with the elegant, textural planting style established in the front garden.

🌿 Skimmia japonica: Solid, structural evergreen
🌾 Carex oshimensis 'Everest': Ties in the light, weeping texture of the garden grasses and spills over the edge
✨ Euonymus (Variegated): For bright fill and creamy-white margins that link to the lighter perennials
🀍 Helleborus niger & Cyclamen: Essential low-level blooms of white that thrive in the cold

Planning ahead - what do with the plants when its time for a seasonal change-over?

The Skimmia and Euonymus are shrubs, they can be enjoyed for 1-2 seasons, and then transplanted into a larger container or a permanent spot in the garden. The Carex can also be divided or moved to the ground once it becomes too dense. For the elegant Helleborus niger, once the window box needs its spring change they can be transplanted into a permanent, sheltered spot in the back garden's shady border. The smaller Cyclamen can be kept in a pot or naturalised in a cool garden spot.

November Update
LAWNS should really be left alone now or have their final winter cut very soon (grass left taller, not close cropped), but there is still plenty to do - we have been weeding beds, pruning trees, clearing leaves, shaping, edging, re-potting and still removing the last of the green summer excess around our S.W. London base.

INDOORS you could be planting Amaryllis and Paperwhites this week - if started now (they come cold forced) they should bloom in time for Christmas. Other bulbs need a prolonged cold snap a.k.a Winter in order to get going in 3 months time, so most should really be outside in the ground now or in the next couple of weeks. If you don't have time to plant them you can even put them in the fridge, so they get a cold snap before you sort them next year.

OUTDOORS trench planting is a good technique to get swathes of bulbs in quickly across areas of your garden especially if you don't have much time. Daffodils, tulips, crocuses, irises can be layered en-masse to produce successions of flowering that last into May.

FRONT GARDENS this week I have been prepping window boxes with seasonal elegance in mind. Some of the plants on my list this week for a cool but understated display:

Skimmia japonica 'Kew White' - Evergreen with dense, glossy, dark green leaves. Features tight clusters of creamy-white flower buds that provide great structure and light colour all winter long

Euonymus 'Emerald Gaiety' - Small, tough, evergreen leaves with striking creamy-white edges. The white margins often blush pink or rosy-red when exposed to cold or frost, adding beautiful subtle colour.

Tassel Fern - Beautiful, robust, evergreen fern with large, elegant, deeply cut fronds. It offers soft, intricate texture and a lush green shade that thrives even in low winter light.

Helleborus (Christmas Rose) - Produces beautiful, single, cup-shaped white flowers from late December/January, contrasting with the dark green, leathery foliage.

Carex 'Everest' - Evergreen ornamental grass with arching, fountain-like blades of white and green. It provides graceful, movement-filled texture and helps disguise the edge of a window box.

Residents and Landlords

We ❀️garden maintenance; Gardening is an all year endeavour, little and often wins the race. However your garden is feeling today we can help. Shaping, pruning, lifting and presenting your garden in all its glory is the order of the day. Annual end-of-season tidy ups, regular maintenance, end of tenancy, serious jungle taming as required.

* Covering SW and SE borders - Lambeth, Wandsworth, Southwark, Merton, Sutton *

Trimming trees, lifting canopies, dividing herbaceous perennials, re-seeding lawns and planting bulbs. And then there is weeding and tilling, applying mulch and compost to ensure you have the best blooms and foliage the season has to offer. Hedges to power-washing and everything in between.

Attention to detail, delivering clean lines and uplifted spaces. We have access to a wide variety of architectural planting and seasonal varieties including Palms, Ferns, Shrubs and Grasses . This year we are also putting in mushroom beds 🌱 πŸ„πŸ„winecaps and firepit morels.

Get in touch with Andres today, send a WhatsApp on 07440 564 280 with a photo of your garden and an outline of your requirements. Happy Gardening πŸŒžπŸ¦‹
