Royal Ascot begins this week, marking the continuation of a sporting tradition that has shaped British culture since the early eighteenth century.

In recognition of the meeting, we are highlighting two horse-racing brooches from our collection. The first, an English gold horse and jockey brooch dated 1976, reflects the enduring association between jewellery and the turf. The second, a gold horse brooch by the French jeweller André Vassort, created circa 1970, demonstrates how equestrian subjects continued to inspire leading designers in the twentieth century.

Both pieces speak to the long history of horse racing as a source of artistic and decorative expression, transcending fashion to become part of a broader cultural narrative.

Bulgari Diamond Trombino Ring, Italian, Circa 1963.

Among the most recognisable designs in twentieth-century jewellery, the Trombino occupies a significant place within Bulgari’s post-war aesthetic, uniting architectural form with an exceptional understanding of diamond composition.

This example is centred on a 2.83-carat pear-shaped brilliant-cut diamond (E colour, VS2 clarity), framed by tapered baguette-cut diamonds and approximately 1.29 carats of round brilliant-cut diamonds, bringing the total diamond weight to approximately 4.52 carats.

The design exemplifies the maison’s departure from conventional French influences in favour of a distinctly Italian visual language, sculptural, volumetric and boldly proportioned. The elevated gallery and carefully calibrated arrangement of diamonds create both optical depth and remarkable luminosity, demonstrating the technical sophistication for which the Trombino became renowned.

More than an engagement ring, the Trombino represents a pivotal chapter in the evolution of modern jewellery design, reflecting Bulgari’s enduring contribution to the development of twentieth-century high jewellery.

Its vivid colour is beautifully enhanced by the surrounding diamonds, arranged in a coronet-style cluster that gives the ring height, structure and radiance.

6.25 Carat Old Mine Diamond Two Stone Ring, circa 1910.

An exceptional example of early 20th century platinum work, featuring finely executed millegrain edging and a pierced openwork gallery entirely crafted by hand. These details were not decorative afterthoughts — they reflect the technical precision of Edwardian jewellers working at a time when platinum had only recently become viable for jewellery making.

The delicacy of the openwork allows light to pass through the stones and mounting alike, giving the ring an architectural lightness that modern cast manufacture simply cannot achieve. Under magnification, the hand-applied millegrain reveals the subtle irregularities that distinguish true period workmanship from contemporary reproduction.

Set with old mine cut diamonds whose proportions predate standardised modern cutting, the ring retains the softer, more atmospheric scintillation characteristic of antique stones.
