What to Consider Before Choosing an Engagement Ring 💎

Start with the person, not the ring photograph
Reference photographs are useful. We use them all the time.

What matters more is understanding why somebody likes a particular ring.

It may be the low profile, the fine band, the proportions of the centre stone or simply how little metal is visible from above.

Then we have to decide whether those details work together and whether they suit the wearer.

This becomes particularly important in our private client jewellery work. With engagement rings, the wearer is often absent from the process. Sometimes I work with her partner, sometimes with a PA or another representative.

That means building a picture from what is known about her rather than asking her directly.

Sometimes one small detail changes the design conversation. A client may mention that his partner is a doctor and wears medical gloves at work. Of course he already knew that. He simply had no reason to connect it with the engagement ring until we started discussing setting height and how exposed the stone should be.

It does not mean a fine jewellery ring can be made suitable for every working situation. She may still need to remove it at work. But it is much better to know before the ring is made.

Delicate against cashmere and fine knits, but with enough gold, structure and diamond presence not to disappear. The elongated marquise gives a simple necklace a sharper, more distinctive line.

Turn it over and you’ll see the difference. The back is finished in solid 18K gold, with a substantial polished bail made as part of the piece.
