Crocheted horses, from the hands of artisans in Peru to the National Theatre shop in London…

When the National Theatre came to us looking for crocheted horses for this summer’s run of War Horse, we knew exactly who to call.

Ana, an artisan with the Hope Jewellery Project in Lima, Peru, designed the horse and then taught her mother-in-law, Primi, how to make it too. Together, they’ve lovingly crocheted every horse for the shop.

Through fair trade, Ana and Primi are able to earn a fair wage while working flexibly from home, balancing skilled work with family life. We couldn’t be prouder to share their craftsmanship and their story.

These exclusive horse keyrings are available only through the National Theatre making them the perfect souvenir for War Horse fans. 🧶🐴❤️

What a month! Laura wrapped up the final leg of her Peru & Ecuador trip which was full of workshops, training and collaboration.

On 1st May, International Workers’ Day, there was even time for cake, speeches and an impromptu photoshoot to celebrate 20 years of working together 🎂

Then it was back to the UK with lots of new samples…

Huge thanks to the Royal Opera House and St Paul's Cathedral for taking the time to meet with us. It’s always a pleasure to share what’s in the pipeline.

A real highlight was presenting Ali with a personalised crocheted version of her cat Rocket, made by Tiffany in Peru. Should we start offering personalised crocheted pets as a service?

Next came a chance to reflect and learn at the BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK Fair Trade Network UK Conference in Cardiff. It’s always lovely to meet fellow Fair Trade social enterprises, share best practice and talk about ways to support each other.

Meanwhile, back at JT HQ, it’s been all hands on deck packing and dispatching orders for the National Portrait Gallery, Royal British Legion, Kew Gardens, National Trust and Eden Project, amongst others.

Now we’re catching our breath before the June bespoke orders arrive…

What an inspiring few days at the BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK Conference!

It was wonderful to catch up with so many friends and make some new ones too. From passionate speakers and ethical businesses to thought-provoking discussions and shared ideas, the energy throughout the conference was incredible.

We became so engrossed in conversations that hardly any photos were taken, but thankfully the challenge set by Helen in her “How to get better photos” session meant that Purik and Luna, our well-travelled curious creatures, became the stars of many of the pictures that were captured!

A brilliant few days full of inspiration, connection, laughter, and renewed motivation for what comes next. Cardiff, you were wonderful. 🙌

Thank you so much to the many people involved in putting together such a fantastic event.

Happy World Fair Trade Day! 💚 This year’s theme, ‘Together We Are the Business Revolution’, couldn’t feel more personal to us at Just Trade.

Laura’s recent trip to Peru and Ecuador was a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do.

At the heart of the 10 Principles of Fair Trade is the commitment to building long-term, sustainable relationships with producers.

Laura’s visit was a true celebration of the partnerships, trust and shared values that have been built up over 20 years of Just Trade!

Laura’s last full day in Peru 🇵🇪

It’s been a busy one! From musical bin lorries outside to quality-checking and refining the first batch of new poppies.

From training the entire metalwork team on newly signed-off designs for Tate, to finalising a sample proposal for a new range using recycled materials…

From production underway on an exclusive design for the Eden Project, to signing consent forms for photo use.

From documenting the process behind a crocheted sample for St Paul's Cathedral, to group discussions on the cost of living, helping inform our living wage calculator so pay remains fair…

From crafting pearl jewellery for the National Portrait Gallery, to reviewing pricing and costs, to making mice for the Royal Ballet And Opera

From attaching keyrings to the St Paul’s dogs ready to bring back, to souring paper for printed labels and even squeezing in a birthday celebration 🎂

A full and productive day, with two more workshops still to go!

Curious Creatures in Ecuador! 🇪🇨 After 3 years of trying, Laura finally made it to meet the artisans we’ve been collaborating with online since 2020.

After a 7-hour journey, including a final stretch that barely resembled a road, she arrived in Simiatug. The incredible women artisans had walked for over an hour to meet her…

Next challenge: jumping a ditch to reach the workshop!

It was truly special for Laura to witness the full process and hear the story behind this cooperative of 30 women.

She met three of the original founders, who began in 2020. Much of the income they’ve generated has gone towards their children’s education.

So inspiring to see and hear how the Curious Creatures come to life and to start dreaming up exciting new bespoke creations together…

Laura has now arrived in Ecuador and is busy working with the team for day 1 of the workshops in Ecuador 🇪🇨

An overnight bus journey for Wilmer and David proved well worth it as they spent the day at Magdalena’s workshop in Quito.

From exploring new designs to strengthening fair trade compliance.

So many stories shared, ideas exchanged, and inspiration sparked - an incredible start to this leg of the trip.

Crochet Workshop at Betty’s 🧶 Today we were back with our other crochet team, based in Betty’s house in Villa El Salvador, Lima, Peru.

Everyone was fascinated by Cristina’s stories from her trip to the UK last year, and absolutely delighted to see photos of her in front of the Globe Theatre.

It’s such a familiar building to them - they’ve crocheted hundreds of them over the last couple of years but many had never seen a real photo of it before!

After the storytelling, it was time to get to work on something special: reimagining pieces from our archive as we celebrate 20 years of working together. Exciting things ahead!

Crocheted Poppies ❤️ Today’s session focused on a new crocheted poppy design.

Plenty of concentration, a bit of trial and error, and lots of helping each other along the way.

From getting the petal shape right to positioning the brooch pins, everyone worked together to ensure each person left with an approved finished sample and the materials to continue at home — production has now started!
