You may already have heard the terribly sad news of the passing of Ron Newsham, trustee of The Wheelhouse and one of our much-loved artists in residence.
As one of the guardians of The Wheelhouse, Ron was a familiar and valued presence at Merton Abbey Mills for many years. He generously shared his knowledge of the site's history and heritage while creating the remarkable lino-cut artwork for which he was so well known and respected.
Ron was a stalwart of our community. He organised inspiring workshops, family art events and The Big Draw, and was always looking for ways to celebrate and promote Merton Abbey Mills' rich heritage and artistic roots.
Together with Ieva and the wider Wheelhouse Arts team, Ron helped establish Merton Abbey Mills as a recognised centre for community arts and creativity.
A wonderful, kind and immensely talented man, Ron approached everything he did with quiet thoughtfulness, generosity and dedication. He touched the lives of many people across our community and will be greatly missed.
I know Ron was a friend to many of you. We will keep you updated regarding arrangements to celebrate his life. We will also be sending flowers to Ron's family on behalf of the Merton Abbey Mills community.
