Meet Melissa Hastings of Shaw Road Ceramics 🌿

After years building worlds for film and theatre sets, Melissa now shapes stoneware from her studio in the bush of Oratia, West Auckland. She’s drawn to the way clay holds “fragility and strength in equal measure,” soft and shapeable until fire makes it permanent.

The Waitākere Ranges find their way into everything she makes, from earthy glazes inspired by west coast mist to pieces featuring the ruru and long-tailed bat. Each piece is made slowly and with care, meant to be held, used and treasured for generations.
