The secret language of gold… ✨

Ever wondered what those tiny numbers and symbols stamped inside your jewellery actually mean?

From 9ct to 24ct, the carat tells you how much pure gold a piece contains, but there’s much more to these little hallmarks than meets the eye.

Look closely and you may find an assay hallmark, which can reveal the fineness of the precious metal, where it was tested and hallmarked, and sometimes when it was assayed.

Hallmarking dates back to 1300, when King Edward I introduced legislation requiring silver to meet a recognised standard of purity. The system was created to protect buyers and prevent lower-quality precious metals from being passed off as something more valuable.

Over time, hallmarking was extended to gold and platinum, creating the trusted system we still use today. These tiny marks can offer a fascinating glimpse into a piece’s purity, provenance and history.
