“To me jewellery is a way of expressing my creativity, but also my personality” Julie

Belgian jewellery designer & maker Julie Nicaisse gives life to metals by translating the magic and mystery of unconventional beauty found in nature, and turning it into talismanic adornments amalgamating organic elements, dark elegance, a passion for history, and a love for the planet and admiration for its fauna and flora. Following enrolment onto her first jewellery course in 2006, Julie’s craftsmanship ability grew steadily from strength to strength. She acquired her high level of skill through 8 years’ experience working for a number of renowned jewellers before finally launching her own brand in 2017.

This fascinating stone has been credited with supernatural powers and origins by many cultures. There are so many legends and superstitions about this gem. The ancient Greeks believed opals guarded them from disease and gave their wearers the gift of prophecy. In ancient Rome, it was considered the most precious and powerful of all. The Bedouins believed that opals contained lightning and fell from the sky during thunderstorms. In the Middle Ages, opal was considered a stone that could provide great luck because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose colour was represented in the colour spectrum of the opal.

Opal is known for its unique display of flashing rainbow colours called play-of-colour. There are two broad classes of opal: precious and common. Precious opal displays play-of-colour, common opal does not. Depending on the conditions in which it formed, opal may be transparent, translucent, or opaque and the background colour may be white, black, or nearly any colour of the visual spectrum. Black opal is considered to be the rarest, whereas white, grey, and green are the most common.

🔎 Opal is not the most durable stone and it is easily damaged, but it is impossible not to be seduced by its fantastic variety of patterns and colours. Because it is a soft stone, opal is an ideal choice for earrings and necklaces. Opal is sensitive to heat and chemicals; therefore, it requires extra care.

💎 Mohs Hardness: 5 - 6.5

Here is a little peek at my favorite tools 🔎👩‍🏭🔨

1. Jeweller's saw: I use this tool to cut precise curves and shapes out of metal sheet or wire.

2. Collet block : Is used with a matching collet punch to shape, form, stretch, or taper metal collets for stone setting.

3. Pliers: Jewellers use several different types of pliers to cut, bend, shape, and hold sheet metal and wire.

4. Torch: I have several different torches of various sizes and I use them for soldering and melting metal.

5. Buff sticks: These sticks wrapped with emery paper are non negotiable in my studio. I used them to finish all my pieces; to smooth, and prepare the surface before polishing.

6. Ring mandrels: I use these to measure, size, shape, and round rings.

7. Hammers & mallet: These tools are used to shape, form, flatten, smooth, chase, stamp and texture precious metals.

8. Mitre jig: This one is definitely my favorite tool! I use it to hold wire, sheet metal, and tubing at 45° or 90° angles which helps me saw and file perfectly flush and seamless joints.

9. Doming block and punches: I used these to shape flat sheets of metal into a three-dimensional curved shapes or domes.

These are all essential jewellery making tools, well they are to me 😉 And you will find most of these on a jeweller's bench. But it also depend on the type of jewellery you are making.

Diamonds exist in various colours such as white (transparent), green, grey, pink, blue, black, red, purple but they are more commonly brown or yellow.

If you decide to go for a classic white diamond, make sure you familiarise yourself with the 4 value factors of a stone:
💎Cut,
💎Carat,
💎Colour
💎Clarity
– known as the 4Cs before making any decision.

You can find more information on coloured gemstones and diamonds on my website.

I designed an engagement ring for J over 2 years ago.

S said YES!!!! And at the beginning of this year J & S asked me to design their wedding rings.

So here I wanted to share a little behind the scenes of the process of making a wedding ring shaped around an engagement ring.

Last week I visited Antwerp.

My first stop was at Dav Tools a well stocked jewellery supply shop.

I then headed to the where I met my friend who gave me a private guided tour of the museum. He used to be a diamond dealer so you can imagine how interesting this was for me. It wouldn’t have been the same without him!

After lunch we pop by shop, which I highly recommend to any jewellery lover visiting Antwerp.

I also had a full guided tour of the city, learning about the history and legends of Antwerp.

It was a perfect day thanks to my friend Alain, who has been so generous with information about his home town.

This day will remain in my memory forever 🫶🏼

The new wedding rings are here ✨

This new range is inspired by nature, such as the movement formed at the surface of the water in the rivers and by our forests, with their multitude of trees stretching between earth and sky.

All wedding rings are handmade to order to your exact size in 100% recycled 14ct or 18ct gold.

Happy Friday,

x Julie
