Controversial take: Not every customer is a customer worth keeping.

For a long time, I tolerated disrespectful and entitled behaviour from customers because I thought that was simply part of running a business.

I’ve since changed my mind.

One of the reasons I built Foreign Circles was to create something of my own. Something that reflects my values, my vision and, to an extent, allows me the sovereignty to operate on my own terms.

That doesn’t mean we’re above criticism. Far from it. We make mistakes, we take responsibility, and we do our best to put things right.

But there’s a difference between expecting good customer service and believing that spending money gives you the right to disrespect someone.

I could share some stories, but that’s not the point.

The point is simple: Foreign Circles is not for everyone.

We’re not Amazon. We’re an independent business, and while we will always strive to provide an excellent customer experience, we won’t reward disrespect simply because someone has made a purchase.

Thankfully, these experiences are extremely rare. The overwhelming majority of our customers are genuinely wonderful people, and they’re the reason we continue doing what we do.

But going forward, I would rather lose a sale than compromise the values of the business I built.

Good customer service should never require the surrender of self-respect.

Curious to hear what other business owners think. Is the customer really always right?
