Even though Aquamarine, Topaz and synthetic Spinel may look similar, gemologists separate them through refractive index, pleochroism, inclusions and specific gravity.

Aquamarine shows a softer watery blue and natural growth features, topaz has higher brilliance and perfect cleavage, while synthetic spinel is singly refractive, often too clean, and may contain curved growth lines or gas bubbles under magnification.
